Just curious, but what's age got to do with it? |

Maybe "young" in their career as luthiers? |

To be the cynic - Maybe young and callow and easily scammed. (They have already hit some of the old and gullible and easily scammed a few years back) |

Most of us could easily build you a guitar, a nice guitar. And in fact an older more experienced Luthier often builds a better guitar.... From my standpoint as a full time maker I am a bit put off by your opening request. Little things like the way you phrase a question can see that you never get a spot in my build queue. |

When I look at some of the guitars I built when I was "young", I don't think "young" is where you want to start when you order a custom guitar. And yes, I can look at them because they are still hanging on my shop wall. |

It's definitely an odd first post. Being someone who trys first to see the best in people perhaps he just wants to give a young and budding luthier a chance? |

Meaning young in Luthier career …...age has nothing to do with it Wanting to give someone a chance that's all |

Now you need to redefine 'young' in those terms. So if you define the 'age' of the luthier in the quantity of guitars built then ten seems to be the magic number for most young luthiers. After ten guitars the fit and finish is good enough to pass as sellable. After about 50 the tone is dialed in and the luthiers fingerprint starts to take shape. As Brian said most, even the young ones, can make a decent guitar. Even the first ten might sound spectacular but not look so great. In the end though you will probably be ok buying from a young luthier and I know when I was young I appreciated people taking the risks. Good luck. |

Being as you are from Canada, is your budget in Canadian or US dollars. If Canadian I wouldn’t expect any US makers to be interested given the difference in our dollar. Just saying. Cal |

I consider your request reasonable and am sure you will get some takers. You can’t sustain a business hand making guitars at that price, but that is far from unreasonable for someone who is still learning his trade. If your initial post seemed to get some pushback it is because we have all seen similar requests that were far from reasonable. They usually go: “I want someone to custom make me a guitar, put 100+ hours into it, and charge me less than a cheap Chinese factory pumping out thousands of guitars a month with a government subsidy and near slave labor.” Two bits of unsolicited advice: 1) take your email address out of your post. This forum, like all forums, is constantly being scrapped by malicious software. People can contact you privately directly through this forum. 2) For several years I helped teach guitar building. What I noticed is that all that extra attention a hand built guitar got, even from a first time builder, usually sounded and played way above its class. Where factories seem to have the edge is in cosmetics. Robot spray machines, dedicated binding ledge cutters, etc., means factory guitars can cover a lot of sloppy set up and build with super glossy finish. Keep your plans for a cosmetically simple guitar, and you will be likely very happy with what a “youngster” even in their sixties will make for you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
