Post subject:  Thanks!

I will be taking a break from the seemingly endless commuting to and from Germantown, and starting something new in the way of endeavors in the New Year...finishing up some long-delayed post-grad work which should provide an additional option should I chose to move to a more academic-focused path in my professional career. With that change in focus, I'll be taking a break from what has been a very intensive apprenticeship as a luthier/repair person, as well as from the day-to-day work of eating and breathing instrument repair.

I'd like to thank all of those OLFers that showed endless patience with my questions and - perhaps more importantly - my answers, as well as those fellow luthiers that politely tolerated my company in several local shops, at PATINA, and many 'Luthier's Breakfasts' at the Old Towne Cafe. A special thanks to:

- Mr. Ed Minch, who was kind enough to keep me in vintage #3 and #5-1/4 Stanley planes - as well as encouraging words - at a fraction of what he could have made selling to anyone else, and

- Mr. Hesh Breakstone, who - despite a bumpy start to our relationship, showed amazing patience and kindness, as well as a very welcome degree of professional courtesy

I wish all of you the best, and hope to check back in from time to time.

Woodie G

Wow! What a face to wake up to.
Just a little shocked, because, well, thought you were a young man.
Anyway, I've been around here for about 9 years,
with a long break, and came back here 6 months or so ago.
I remember when you joined,
with your newbie questions, eager to learn.
On coming back I was impressed with what you have learned,
and respected and took your advice, for "word".
Great job, and best of luck to you and all of your endeavors.
Alan

Thanks to you for your many contributions here. I've copied a number of your posts to preserve them for future reference. You've always struck me as one who is a seeker of knowledge so if your future path takes you into academics, you undoubtedly will do well. Best of luck in whatever comes next.

Hey Woody, I've been impressed with your capacity to be concise without being terse.

Will you be building at all?

I hope things go well for you, Woodie.

If you could give us more information about your academic/professional path without sacrificing your privacy, I am sure many of us would be interested in learning more about what you plan to do.

Post subject:  Re: Thanks!

I would hope to have some time to keep my hand in on repair and build projects, but my new commute will be in the opposite direction from the (former) shop and somewhat more frequent (3-4 times per week), so for now, I see a 3-4 year hiatus. Should things go well over the next 18 months, I may drop in and add some details, but until then, just know that it is rather unlikely we will cross paths if I am acting in my professional capacity.

Again, thanks for your kind words and best wishes to all.

I hope that those here that may feel a bit put out will forgive me that lack of candor re: my sex...it really is easier to be thought of as one of the guys and be treated as such in these situations.

The builders manual is still in work, although I have finished any of my work on the files. There are several potential repair student/apprentice candidates, and that job usually comes with the task of updating and adding to the document. Should the boss take on who I believe he is leaning toward, I would expect progress toward release will continue in good hands (the candidate spent several years as a women’s wear magazine assistant editor...a much better writer and editor than ever I could be). Beyond that, no promises.

Finally...I learned so much from your posts, Dr. Kennedy. Although it may seem from my responses in other threads that I am perhaps less than optimistic re: the current roles and mission of ASIA and GAL, I believe you would find that both organizations would be delighted to have you as a contributor to their publications.
