I need some help.

I designed a new logo in Inkscape knowing that I wanted a vector image that could be scaled without getting pixilated. I have a version I think I like but will need to stare at it in various forms and get some advice and feedback. What I don't know how to do is use the image I created. What format should I save it as so I can be able to scale and print on typical software? We have a cricut and I would someday like to be able to use that to cut out various things with this design. Does anyone know how to import these images into that?



Here is a low-res (so it will fit on the screen) picture of the design, I would love honest feedback! I'm just a hobby guy so I don't really have a business but my workshop does have a "name." It is Muir Castle Strings.

It looks a bit catty wompus. The crown at the top tilts and the bases of the letter look different. Was that intentional?

The asymmetry was on purpose but also something I want feedback on. One of the reasons I wanted the asymmetry is to help hide my lack of skills, it that is not the biggest reason. I wanted the strike of the letter to be a bit bolder on one side than the other. I ended up rerouting the difference between them and that may be adding to the effect. The curves of the top are tighter than the curves on the bottom hoping to add to the impression of height in that the top is further away from the observer than the base. The curves also move towards the middle on the right side, so that the observer is a bit off to the left. I’m not sure if either of those worked. Every time I sketched this idea it came out that way so I figured my brain was trying to tell me that is what I wanted.

I am somewhat second guessing the asymmetry now. I put a cut out on one of my peg heads which have rounded tops. Naturally the curves don’t follow the top. I’m not sure if this is a problem or not.

I’d straiten it.
Export it as jpg
Keep it as a working file in you Inkscape so that you can resize it as a vector.

In other words ... size it in Inkscape them export it to jpg to print

I did another. Edison where the rook outline including to top and bottom arcs are symmetrical but the stroke on either side of the M are not the same thickness. I’ll try to post it here once we are done catching up on distance learning on the computer. . .

What software does this cricket use? I think that would be your limitation.
Inkscape can export as pdf. That is a relatively common format.

If you want it to tilt, you should tilt all the elements to a degree that looks intentional. Do you know how to use perspective?

Barry, I don’t know how to use perspective is that a tool in Inkscape? I’ve just been playing around trying to learn the software.

Bryan, I think that you either need to make it wider or shorter, and either skew the asymmetry more or make it symmetrical.

Edit: I see the rook now on the symmetrical version. The symmetry lends itself to the tall logo better.

I’m not sure what you mean by “export” the file. Inkscape works natively in .svg format, which is a generic all purpose vector file format.

As someone else pointed out, the limitation is your end use. If you are going to just print it on paper and use it as a visual template you can print straight from Inkscape. If you have a laser cutter or CNC, then it depends on what software you are using to generate the g code. Most will import an SVG file, but if not Inscape will export to DFX, and that should cover just about anything. Just know that units are often stripped out of DFX files. You will have to scale it in your CAM software.

Finally, Inkscape can render your vector drawing into almost any bitmap format you would want: tif, jpeg, png, etc. Not sure why you would need that, but the capability exists.

It’s all up to how you intend to use the image.

Feedback from my wife (previous graphics designer)...

If doing the “funky” top, try it without the lines at the bottom at all so it looks more like a pawn shape.

If keeping the lines try making the top and the lines both “funky” so that the lines reflect the top. (Note: I sent her only the revised version).

Maybe try making one or the other a bricks pattern (this seems like a PITA to me, but sending the feedback anyway ).

BTW: I like the logo and I think the castle top is a great idea.

Perspective is a graphics technique where all horizontal lines converge at one point which gives a 3D effect. In your case, I would make a point a couple of inches to the right of the inlay. Then draw lines radiating from the common point to define various horizontal lines of the graphic.

If you can save it as an Illustrator file (as old of a version you can save it in) it should work with pretty much anything. It would be a ".AI" filename.

You're saving a very basic vector file, no layers, no colors, so it will be tiny file.
