There's got to be a name for this, I know I'm not the first one to do it. But, I'm really happy that it looks like it's going to work.
I'm building with beautiful Ziricote that has some great sapwood that I love. It ran to the edge of the sides. I didn't want to loose the stunning pattern! So, I cut enough to make a binding, then cut the same amount from the non sapwood side and glued it where the sapwood was. This way, when I route out the binding channel, I can just put in my beautiful sapwood bindings that will match perfectly (hopefully) to the sides. I was afraid the glue would give when bending the sides, but it held!
I guess I didn't have to use binding from the opposite side, could have just been a cheap wood, but it worked.

Hate to break it to you but it looks like you forgot to account for the thickness of the soundboard...
It is a good idea though.

Looks like the sides are going to have an added "purfling" about the the same thickness as the top... My goodness, how do I miss that?

If you build with a rigid outside mold and radius sanding dish, you can just glue the linings down a little lower, plane some wood off, and sand the rest. Always easier to take some off than to put it back :)

I'm amazed that actually worked. You could always treat it as though the top has no binding and just round over the spruce edge. That would be truly unique.

Yep, I did the same for a uke I’m working on. It’s basically binding and purfling height - thickness of soundboard is how much you want to laminate onto the side.

Like Dennis said, you can always just take it lower in the radius dish but you’ll lose overall body depth for however much you take off.

I too love ziricote! :D

I just glue in my lining taller. You also have to do the blocks taller, lest you end up gluing something on top of them to compensate. Not too bad on the soundboard side, but the back not so much. Damhikt!

(If I'm understanding that right. You don't want to lose a nice wood feature when you route it off for bindings?)

Yep, that's exactly what I was trying to do! Fortunately I only had sapwood on the soundboard side, I left the back side normal. Those are also great solutions!
I ended up just taking 1.5 mm off of the sides, which is the thickness of my side purfling and half the thicknes of my top. I'll still see a bit of the dummy binding once I'm finished, but luckily I made it out of Ziricote.
So, my sides should look like this:
-Binding (with sapwood)
-1.5 mm purfling (3 strips)
- 1.5 mm of the dummy Ziricote binding
-Side of the guitar that matches the sapwood on the binding.
I should be binding in a couple of days, I'll post pics.
