Left in the ocean it will gradually deteriorate and be lost also. Removing part of it and preserving it in a museum might be a way to "have your cake and eat it too". |

That isn't fossilized... fossilization takes millions of years.. That is just very old wood. |

Fossilized Mammoth ivory is another misnomer. Some of it has become mineralized and the minerals have colored the ivory and changed it's appearance. Still, it is some very old wood. If it was truly fossilized it would be much less interesting, and might wind up in someone's coal stove. |
