Anyone use this successfully? I've got a vintage project I am working on and after headstock repair have stained with lamp black and I figured if I went right into padding on shellac then I would be basically rubbing the lamp black out so I thought if I spray the shellac on then it will preserve the opaque black. I'm also using it on another project where I had to stain the headstock and want to seal that as well. I tried warming it up and at room temps and get terrible orange peal with it. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated. Regards. |

I’ve used it to seal rosettes and a head plate decal. Several light coats. Worked great. |

Zinssers aerosol is dewaxed, which is a good thing, but the nozzle is coarse and there is an additive that slows the curing, compared to fresh mixed. I used it a lot when mixing my own wasn’t possible — now I only use it to seal channels. Best advice: be very patient. Light coats and oodles of curing time between coats. Avoid the temptation to speed things up with thicker coats. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I use it for sealing channels and such, like Tim said. Works fine for that. Not a final finish quality product though, IMO. |

I used it on 2 guitars years ago. If you spray it thick, it takes a long time to dry and can shrink causing hairline checking. It does end up really smooth and shiny. Takes about 2 cans. I do use it for a sealer/protective coat on my tops during building. |

Yeah I think I was putting it on too thick. It still orange peals though but it did manage to lock in the stain so I could sand the orange peal out and then just continue with FP. |

I used it once to create a base for FP, and it seemed to work well for that. I’ve been planning on using it again but just haven’t FP’ed a guitar in a couple of years. It didn’t orange peel for me at all. But I do generally have a light hand when spraying. I watched an automotive guy once and couldn’t believe how heavy a coat he would lay on. I use it to spray around rosette before routing and before cutting out sound hole. I also use it to seal the inside of the guitar which I previously padded on after mixing flakes. The spray looks better inside. I've never used it for an exterior finish. |
