Had this hand built guitar since I was 18, love it to bits but been distracted by vintage gibsons and scratch building guitars. Anyway, got it out, strung it up, too much neck relief, tightened the rod, heard some bad wood crunching sounds and stopped. Tried to loosen the nut completely, just kept turning it without it moving. Pulled it a bit and the end of the rod appeared in the sound hole. Bad news. Anyway, I've only built guitars, not repaired them so was hoping to get it done professionally, especially as ive had no workshop space for the last two years. Im in the republic of Ireland though and have no trusted luthier contact here so im hoping to get some advice. I imagine I need the fretboard off for starters. I miss being on this site and building guitars! Hope you're all well as can be. I'll try to attach a picture. |

If that is a double action rod, you should be able to slide it back in and tighten it and the pressure should keep it in. Pat |

It was built at least thirty years ago, were they even invented? Contrary to my youthful good looks I was 18 a good while ago... |

Even as a one way, it might be worth sliding it back into place and tightening it. See what happens. It could be what you heard was just adhesive holding the rod in place letting go... |

Oh yeah, I was thinking that shadow was the other part. 30 years - probably not! Pat |

Gerry Hayes is in Ireland, check him at Haze Guitars. Maybe he can help or refer you to someone who can. |
