I don't think I understand what you're saying here... |

Maybe he's cut a binding/purfling too wide for what he had planned? |

Or possibly you need a more complicated binding scheme because you made the channel too wide. Make it fancy to fix errors. |

If you are trying to ask if other people have to use extra purfling lines to deal with a binding channel that is bigger than it needs to be for the pattern originally planned, the answer is yes. Just roll with it. There can be a small asymmetry to the new pattern, but it’s not like there are that many options. If you use wood binding, and use a dark wood for your binding, maybe the last outside purfling line can match the binding and blend in with it. Just an idea. |

I always thought that one who fixes mistakes was the definition of a luthier! That said, I'm always surprised at how carved in stone many dimensions, colors, and wood choices ere, especially on violins. Standardized parts for machinery is one thing. I just decided to just have a very tiny binding on the back of the one I'm making now, just so it is clean and easy. There are no rules; are there? |

Just this afternoon I had 2 of my guitars side by side because the carpet cleaners were coming. The one on the left just has a black binding with no purfling. The one on the right has abelone with a couple of extra pieces in there. The two guitars came out of the same mold and I found it interesting that the shape of the 2 bodies look quite different just looking at the different edge treatments Ed M . |
