Never worked with plastic before. Will binding melt under nitro? Or is there a trick to this?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

If you haven't worked with plastic binding I highly recommend thin CA as your adhesive. Tape the binding in place, tack it with little drops of water thin CA between the tape, pull the tape and run a bead all the way around the seam. I scrape binding instead of sanding it. And no, nitro won't hurt it a bit.

I’m not sure I understand the use of CA. It won’t melt the plastic like the specialized glue for this problem.

Body was painted first, tobacco sunburst. So any kind of flood fill is not a promising approach.

Plan to tape all edges before I do anything. Thoughts?

I have installed plastic binding by placing CA in the corner of the binding channel and holding the plastic binding in place until the CA "grabs". I work 2 to 4 inch sections at a time and am careful to not apply too much CA in the channel to -try- to avoid excess CA running out onto the top and back and sides. It requires some patience to do it this way but does obviate the need to do a lot of clean up from the "tape and flood" method.

Thoughts?
Between gluing your binding and scraping it down level, you may need to touch up the edges of the burst.

not a big fan of CA I use Duco cement or weldon. CA can turn spruce yellow

Hot, thin CA will melt binding just a bit, which is enough for good adhesion.

Has anyone tried using Oatey clear plastic pipe cement to glue plastic bindings?

I will keep an eye out for Duco cement. It might also be a less messy option over tape and flood CA.

I asked the same question here 10 years ago. The answer is that Oatey solvent will dissolve PVC and make it stick to other pieces of PVC but not to wood. When it evaporates it's gone. Although I guess you could use it when pre-assembling plastic pfurling strips before installing . Search 'Oatey' here to get the thread from July 2011.

I use acetone to adhere binding.
I did some testing, straight acetone was king.

acetone doesn't work with all plastics only celluloid and acetate duco works with most plastics

I've sprayed several instruments with nitro that have plastic binding and no problem. I would like to know, is there a source for a white plastic binding that has the fine black line at the bottom already laminated? Like the guitar in Brad Goodman's post when you look up "Oatey" in the search blank.

Before the hazmat bs there used to be plenty like that. Now I can't find it either.

I looked at the Axiom,Inc site and found it but. A $35 hazmat charge goes with it. I thought maybe there was some available that wasn't the celluloid nitrate.
