Went to the trades day this morning and was looking around for old planes and picked up an unmarked #6 plane & a new old stock in original box Stanley 9 1/4 I got them both for a combined $45. So I get home and start cleaning the big old#6 down looking for indicators for info as I cleaned it up I noticed some casting letters & patent #s in various places. After further reading I have determined I have what appears to be a Stanley Bailey type 7 #6 complete with rosewood furniture. From my research type 7 planes were manufactured from 1893-1899 that makes this my oldest tool He needs some cleaning up but it’s all there and in pretty good shape. I removed the wood and disassembled it completely with no issues like stuck screws or anything and he is now getting an overnight vinegar bath. |

Great find! I bought a few old bench planes from a used tool store for $5 each. One of them ended up being a Stanley from the late 1800s. Cleaned it up and it still works great. Every time I use it I think about how different life was for the original owner than it is for me. |

Yeah man it’s crazy because from that time period cast metal planes were like cutting edge tech no pun intended. |

Still haven’t decided on what I’m going to do with the finish I might just leave the what little of the old Jappaning is left and just shellac over it. I’m not going for a full restoration I want to get it tuned up an put him to work. |

Now that I got it cleaned up a little I can see he is a little older than I thought it’s a type 6 from around 1888! I will post a couple of links that have been good resources for this old Bailey / Stanley. https://www.timetestedtools.net/2016/01 ... ne-typing/ https://woodandshop.com/identify-stanle ... ype-study/ |
