Got a couple pieces of Padauk I plan to use but man is it carrot orange. How does India ink look on Padauk?

Most Padauk loses that bright orange color within a few weeks and then continues to fade or darken more slowly. There are several different species called Padauk and they behave in slightly different ways.

Hopefully darken things up a bit or at least tone that carrot color down.

It will darken a lot. I made a padauk guitar—one of my first 10. It had humongous pores. I dyed the pore filler to match the wood. The pores now appear to be pink against the rich dark background. Anything you do with dye now will be wrong next year. Don’t do it. The guitar still sounds wonderful, but there’s not another that looks like it.

Whoops already inked up the bridge but I’m not filling any pores, just the ink then may a little danish oil after gluing down. I swore I’ve read about guys using the Padauk as fretboards and using India Ink to get that rosewood look and I don’t remember anyone reporting problems but I guess I will find out for myself.

From my experience, there must be at least a couple of kinds of padauk. I've built instruments of padauk that were crazy orange for a time, and then turned into a very pleasant orangish brown over time. I've built others that stayed pretty orange. Still darkened up and moved away from the "safety orange" world, but were still definitely orange. I like padauk, but the pores are indeed huge. Never tried dying it with anything.

I have a Padauk that is striped, and has huge pores. The other board that I have to get sliced, is more even in color, and the pores don't look as large. Neither one seem "offensive" to me. I don't remember them being any brighter. The guitar may be a bit more purply red, and the board, maybe more red than the photo. Nothing that looks like a road sign.
They are different.
