I don't hear too much about plans.

I bought a plan a week or so ago, and just got it printed today. It's another 1800's guitar. And it's another plan from Javaca.eu; the Dutch Luthier. Nice plans.

This one is a Panormo guitar from1825. It has ladder or cross braces. Apparently one of the earliest fan braces? It has a bridge with no saddle. It is a slot head, with mechanical tuners that still work. 25" scale, in-between the Stauffer and my Archtop. The plans come with plans for the coffin case.

I'm happy with it. Now I need to have a slice cut off of a piece of Birdseye that I bought for a one piece viola, and find rib stock to match. That piece is JUST long enough at 17 5/8"! The width has a quarter inch on it. Will still be thick enough for a viola. Or more guitars?

How thick would you have something like that cut? It finishes at 2.5mm?

Depends on how good the resaw setup is.

For example, I was taking a top down to thickness last night. It was supplied at 5mm, the top ended up at 2.8 when I was happy with it.
That material was pretty well sawn.

My own resaw capabilities are in need of improvement, so I tend to saw on the thick side and make a lot of sawdust.

I can resaw 3' ribs max. I've tried more. It isn't pretty. There is a place not far away, Armstrong Millworks, that has up to 12" resaw, and other milling services; besides a barn with exotic and domestic wood. I trust them. I have some Katalox, and Padauk too that I'd like cut. Might as well do it together.

Fred. I used plans from this guy for a Stauffer that came out nice. I can't find them on the site now. He does show building that, and a Terz Stauffer, and a Panormo. Those plans were not full size. I just scaled them from a letter size copy. It came out nice. I thinned the cross braces WAY down, so I don't know what the plan size would come out. The plan for the Stauffer is on the second link

The guy I got the Panormo from has a Reis that is like the Stauffer, and it is a full size plan, but with a different head, and not the fancy one that everyone knows. It would be easier to see how the neck works.

He does have a Grunewald 10 string. I don't have that one.

No Lacote, or Torres. The first guy has a post on building a Lacote 7 string in 2016

Ill be watching this thread with interest.

I recently just completed drawings for this guitar. I had ordered the same plans that you have from Jan van Cappelle but they never showed up. I do have to give him kudo's however because he was really good about trying to get them to me. After contacting him to let him know they didn't arrive I decided to draw my own plans. His plans finally showed up after the third time and 3 months so he was persistent about it (He was writing my address incorrectly).

By then I had my plans almost complete so I have his drawing still in the tube.

I have all the wood chosen and have started thinning the tops, sides and backs, and have the neck blanks to rough shape. I am planning on building 2 of them at the same time, one will be Rosewood back and sides and the other will be Maple.



On a side note, Have you given any thought to the Neck to headstock joint? I have seen it done a couple of different ways be am curious how you plan on doing yours.

Just for reference, here is my plan. I also drew up plans for the work board, Side bending template and jig for laminating the linings.

Here are my materials I am using for the Rosewood one.

Nice job Bob! You do that on a computer? I draw on paper. I used AutoCad at work, but I don't have any drawing programs.

I'll just use the Vee joint. I've made 3 of them. I always.think.that they will get easier! I see that the Vee is curved in.

Have you done early guitars before? Are you building them with fan braces, or the ladders on the plan? I saw photos of originals and the fans were fairly wide, but very flat and low. Probably more classical style. That's what I'm using.

Now I have to go in the basement, and clean up! It's been.cold down there so stuff just piles up. Your shop is so neat. I really don't like working in mess. At least now it is in the mid 50's!

I use a program called Qcad. It is a pretty good 2D graphic program I have been using for a number of years now. It only cost $45.00 for the program and a year of support. The program doesn't expire but after a year you can't update anymore unless you buy another year of support. I have not updated it for a few years and it does just what I need. I use to use Autocad for my business but the price was just too much after I retired. Its a great little program. I use Linux but I am pretty sure they make it for Windows.

That Hidden V Joint is something to behold! I have already done a trial joint to see how difficult it would be and it turned out pretty good. I managed to get a good tight joint on my first try (but I didn't do the "blind" part of it so it cold be a challenge).



Not really... The first guitar I ever built was based on a parlor guitar but I copied the style of a 1800's German guitar I found on the Internet that I liked. So Inside it is a modern Parlor but outside it looks vintage. I am planning on doing both of the Panormo's with the fan bracing. I am interested in see the difference between Maple and Rosewood. In the end I will be giving the Maple one to my Nephew so he is excited to see me working on it.
