Anybody able to justify the cost of this glue?

Sounds like great stuff and for oily woods too. And if Frank likes it that says a lot about it.

It's not very expensive when you consider that this is 32 ounces. Don't know how may guitars that will build but it may be with careful application an ounce a guitar is plenty making this not so pricey.

I like that it can be tinted too, that's cool.

We might get some to try although in our world we glue binding to guitars that have already been finished and the more judicious we are in application the less work we have to do before the mission is accomplished.

Maybe there might be special case situations that would justify spending that much for that glue, but for routine installation of wood or cellulose binding while building a new instrument, I wouldn't even consider it. White glue from either LMI or Titebond does the job just fine. I've bound several instruments with oily cocobolo bindings with no issues at all using either of those white glues.

Btw, LMI sells the FCA glue in a 2 oz bottle too. It's still expensive, but at least you could try a small amount for a much smaller investment to see if you like it or not. I bought a 2 oz bottle of it about ten years ago for faux tortoise shell binding on a couple guitars and ended up not using it because there was something about using it that I didn't like. I don't remember what it was exactly, but I went with LMI white glue for those guitars and it worked fine.

One look at the SDS makes me happy I stopped using plastic binding 35 years ago!

Comparing the SDS sheets it looks like it might be the same product as this (or very similar):

If you can find it locally at a plumbing supply you might find it in a smaller can and also save on shipping. A gallon would be a lifetime supply.

I have used LMI’s FCA binding cement in the small bottles for as long as I can remember. At least 14 years. I assume this is the same stuff. It has always worked great for me.

I would be cautious getting a large container if you don’t plan to use it quickly. I have observed that after opening the stuff thickens up quite a bit if left to sit for a few months.

For me I rarely build more than two at a time so it can be several months before I am ready to do binding again.
