All, I have been searching for a solution to this for some time, but can't seem to find the solution. I am doing my first build from a LP kit. I wanted to have a black face for my headstock similar to Gibson. The body and neck are white. I am using Colortone spray can lacquer for both colors.

I started out by taping the sides, then lightly sanding off the excess tape to end up with a fairly sharp line. Then sprayed a couple coats of black. Removed tape and let that dry, then taped the face, also sanding down the edges to remove the excess tape. Then sprayed the white. I cannot for the life of me get a clean line between the colors. Any tricks or suggestions? I've managed to try to paint it manually, terrible idea, then tried to sand back the mistake and went though the color. I think I have to start over, but really would like to know how to get that clean line between the colors?

perhaps try spraying some clear first then the color...the clear will do the bleeding stuff but since it's clear...

First of all - don't sand the tape.

Next - what kind of masking tape are you using?

I've tried regular blue painters tape and a green frog tape with similar results.

Go to an auto body supply store. They will have the line of 3 M tapes for use in auto body paint work.
Not an auto parts store……an auto body store. They are usually a wholesale type shop. You are using tape meant for house Painting.
And like Chris said…..don’t sand the tape, apply it accurately right to the edge that you want to mask.

Scotch 233 would be a good choice.

My local independent auto parts dealer stocks a minimum of bodywork repair stuff, Bondo, squeegees, scratch filler, and a few widths of automotive masking tape. Might be worth a check-in at the local before heading to the auto paint shop. I think NAPA might have the same sort of inventory. Check Amazon/Ebay, too? Gas ain't cheap these days.
