not to let the topic go to waste- thanks Mike- Hi, happy new year to everyone. Been a while since I ws here last. Ive decided to do up a replica 58-9, 60 Les Paul Junior double cut. I don't have any hide glue anymore but still have some fish glue. Think it wise to use teh fish to glue the neck? PS: also if anyone know the distance 12th to bridge posts for each side it would be helpful to get me in the ball park. The photos of some of those the bridge is really skewed of center. I read somewhere that when Gibson did it, it goes an 1/8th toward the bass side and an 1/8th back from true bridge distance, I have used this method once in the past on a big baritone I made with successful results. However I was curious if anyone else had different plans as The 1/8th slant seem much less than the real ones I've seen online. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers! |

Regarding fish glue regardless of the push-back from the proponents I would not use it and we had fish glue failures under the most ideal handling, freshness and controls when it got humid in Michigan we had half a dozen failures of bridges. We discontinued its use and went all HHG and never had another problem. I'm speaking of hundreds of bridges that we have reglued. Additionally Gibson used HHG so why not if this is a replica also replicate Gibson's best practices? Regarding the post spacing I don't have specs for you but I do have something for you to consider. Joe Glaser in Nashville offers "Music City Bridges" which are beautifully made wrap around, one piece bridges for Gibson 50's Jr. The bridges solve the intonation problem which was awful on these models. However the Gibson post spacing could vary from year to year making how much compensation to build into the post spacing a moving target. I recently bought one of these bridges for my Collings 290 (Junior type guitar by Collings) and the post spacing was incompatible and I sent it back. My client had one too for a modern day Junior and the post spacing was wrong. Now this was not Music City's fault it is because Gibson puts posts all over the dang place it seems from year to year. So my suggestion is and sorry to be so long winded... call music city and ask for Josh and ask him what exact post spacing he recommends to use his bridges. Then you get an answer that is functionally superior to the originals which were wrong and all over the place AND you can order a bridge and have great intonation too. |
