Later this month I will be going through Phoenix and may or may not have an afternoon to myself. Are there any luthier type things I should try to seek out while I’m there? |

Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery is in Pheonix. I did a tour about 7 years ago. |

Is that something you can do in an afternoon? Is it something you need to arrange ahead of time? |

I believe Kostal Guitars is nearby-may be able to sneak a visit in with him. https://kostalguitars.com/ |

The Musical Instrument Museum is a must. They appear to be very accommodating to luthiers that want to get a closer look at something, particularly if they have advance notice. Some years ago I met one of the people that put that collection together while I was meeting with Darcy Kuronen, then the curator of the musical instrument collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the author of the book Dangerous Curves: The Art of the Guitar. She was Darcy's assistant at that time. The MIM job was apparently her first job out of college, and the assignment was something like, "Here's a zillion dollars. Put together a large collection of significant musical instruments. You got nine months. Go." |

I second the recommendation on the Musical Instrument Museum. It is AMAZING. |

I wish I had known about the Musical Instrument Museum last time I was in Phoenix. Other than a taxi driver trying to scam me, I didn’t find anything of interest when there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Personally, I enjoyed the fine art at the Heard Museum, the cacti & succulents of the Desert Botanical Gardens, the archeological exhibits (inside & outside) of Pueblo Grande Museum, and I hiked the peaks at Papago Park. If you're into aircraft, the Combat Air Museum is in Mesa - just a short drive from Phoenix. |
