Very cool It is fun when you get good enough at sharpening that you can ignore the traditional rules of wood carving. One thing I've wanted to do for a long time is come up with a 3D sculpted headstock shape. But not one that's particularly difficult to do. My current headstock crest is deceptively difficult, especially with binding. The tight curves have to be cut from flat stock rather than bent, and with full purfling it's 18 pieces in all. I do like it, but it doesn't look very unique for all the effort (well this one does with all the inlays and custom tuner buttons). The difficulty with carved guitar headstocks is that you have to leave flat spaces for the tuners. Press fit bushings for open gear tuners reduce the necessary size of the flat area on the front, and peg type tuners allow much more freedom, but I wouldn't want to restrict future choices just for artistic purposes. |
