Hi Folks, I am considering standing up a monthly luthier roundtable specifically for the OLF community. High level idea is to have a monthly series via Zoom. The meeting would consist of - Pre-arranged topics, demos & deep-dives - An opportunity to show off what you’re working on - Open discussion / Q&A These things work best when there is a healthy mix of novice, accomplished, and professional participants. I would be happy to manage the meeting, content, coordinating with presenters, archiving, sharing recordings, and so on. Would this be a valuable addition to the community? This exists in other arenas but to my knowledge doesn’t exist for OLF community members. Let me know what you think one way or the other. I have thick skin and an insatiable appetite for attempting to continually spin more and more plates! Brad Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Sounds good to me. The Michigan Violin makers Association meeting has.been on zoom since Jan. 2020. They can presentations from across the.world. It isn't in person, but it is something. You can't beat an in person presentation from a VSA judge at a Ferrari dealership. That was the last live one in Jan 2020. |

A few thoughts for Brad and the group: I took two group classes from Robbie O'Brien via Zoom during Covid. They went really well. Robbie currently does his Luthier Q&A streams, which are less interactive. You can type in comments, but the presentation is all by Robbie and his guest. They are great in a different way. I like the Zoom interaction format better for what Brad is describing, but would be open to either format. |

Good points. Some ideas…. Agenda items that would need to be pre-defined and more of a 1 -> many session: - Virtual shop tour - Deep dive on a specific topic - Demonstrations - Luthier spotlight - Ask the expert (pre-determined list of “experts” to attend) - Hesh’s corner (it’s literally a corner at AAG) Many -> many: - Show your current work - Everyone show their favorite blah (hand tool, mold, etc…) - Open Q&A to the field - Around the horn (depends on group size) Just ideas. I like the idea too but I would NOT commit to Hesh's corner. I'm C-word adverse and would prefer to see how this pans out first before I dive in. We have never been busier and as the economy sours a bit by design.... I may have more time. Still working nights here too. Good idea though and a huge thanks for Brad for always thinking of all of us!!! |

But on a more serious note, maybe a Hesh presentation during our monthly Zoom meeting can be something of an open invitation, with no commitment or expectation. When you have time and a topic you want to cover, we make time. When you don't, we don't. |

I'm in, too. Perpetual amateur. I've done one of Robbie's Zoom classes and thought it went well also. Taking a flatpicking workshop via zoom starting soon as well. Not as fun as in person, but a whole lot less travel! |

I ran a weekely Zoom group for about 8-10 builders for quite awhile. Getting that size group onboard was not all that easy, but we made it. Running a bigger group would have been trying for me, but then I'm not very computer oriented.Time zones were definitely an issue. We were able to do Hawaii and the West Coast, but that's about it. I always e-mailed out topic suggestions before the event. You definitely want to pay the small additional cost that allows you to extend beyond the free time Zoom offers to get started. It was a bummer at first when Zoom timed out mid topic. It can become a bit of a"herding cats" kind of event without some advance planning. Eventually we ended the group after having too many issues with Zoom.Part of the group split off into a CNC group, and I think it may still be going. Fun while it lasted. As with all groups, the burden for success will be on the leader. |

One of the few silver linings of the pandemic is that many of us have had to wring the problems out of Zoom meetings in order to get anything done. I trust Brad's tech competency; he's more computer-oriented than most folks. |

What I think this would be great for are virtual visits of other people's shops, products, what they are working on, etc. Kind of show-n-tell but for people with WAS, TAS, GAS etc. And if you have a dog or more include them, I love dogs. I would also personally be interested in virtual visits to f*ctories and high-end shops where our stuff gets sold. Having used Zoom and before that WebEx for teaching I don't think it's great tech for that. The instructor has to stop what they are doing and completely focus on the computer, comments, etc and that takes our eyes off the work. I also don't think folks can see through zoom the kind of tolerances that may be in play here such as .0005" for a nut slot clearance, that's not going to be visible virtually. This is also why our fretting class never attempted to go virtual, no one would be able to see the small tolerances we deal in. But it's a good idea for a lot of stuff and I'll help if and when I can. |
