I was just in touch with Arnt who was on the OLF for a long time and asked him if he remembered this thread because I wanted to repost it.

It's the boat that Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford were on repurposed into a geetar....

Thanks to Lars who was just back here too recently for posting this originally

Every time I see a wooden boat (especially one made of mahogany) I think "How many guitars could I make from that?". Of course, I think that whenever I see a large piece of furniture, or anything made of something we'd consider tonewood. I even saw a solid rosewood casket from Italy descend into the ground forever, and shed a few tears over that loss.

:D I do the same and I have this Birdseye maple bedroom set that I am selling and it's over 100 years old and in excellent condition considering. My family had it for over 50 years and we bought it from the original owner who had it around 60 years.

The set is my climate controlled basement since I have instruments down there too. It's pretty nervous these days every time it sees me.... :D

Become a Luthier and you see many things differently that's for sure.

We had the 'Church Door', "The Tree', and now we have 'The Boat.'

I know a guy who used church pews... heaviest oak guitars you've ever strapped on.

Remodelling? The portion of a nice new white oak kitchen benchtop that is cut out to receive the sink is easily large enough for a telecaster …

Did the angelic sound make up for it?

At one time I traded for a Mahogany plank that was s seat in a crew boat that was used to run workers out to drilling rigs and fields near Orange where I live. No telling whose butts have been on those guitars.

This proves my concept that everything is just raw material for me to make stuff from.

JF do you remember the MDF guitar that an OLFer built and showed on the forum? He came and brought the guitar with him to our OLF gathering at the Black Elks Lodge in Ann Arbor.

Sorry I'm not remembering his name other than his last name started with an R but we all got to play the guitar and it sounded on a par with a lot of guitars today.

All wood is indeed tone wood in the right hands.

The OSB guitar was mine - that was a fun day for sure!

Had it at a festival this summer - was the main attraction!

Hi John!!! Been a while and thanks for posting we wanted to see this cool guitar. I played back then at the Lodge and it sounded good and it was new too back then.

Hope you are doing well. Are you still building?

I'm pretty sure I have posted this picture before, but it seems to fit with this "repurposing" thread. I had a Harmony Sovereign H-1260 that needed a new top. I decided to repurpose some planks from old wine crates. I called it my Harmony Sauvignon, and sold it to a guy named Martin. :)

That is too cool and I love how you left the writing on the wood. Hat's off to the Martin guy too :)

Good going I like it!!! Purple Haze man!! :)

Very cool John 70 is a bunch! I got to 54.5 and lost interest in building for the most part. Short attention span here. :( :D

:) Yup there is half a Heshtone in our shop, body is done, label has my customary plastic sheet over it to protect it in finishing. I just never made the neck.

Was thinking of making a lamp out of it for my condo. :). Or a planter a Guitarden with maybe an orchid growing out of it or a pot plant.

Black Acacia, WRC top, BRW binding, Adi bracing, BRW plate. Dave's last one also unfinished is on the same shelf, he's built around 200 and that includes about 100 that were prototypes for a new brand that came to be about 20 years ago. Dave used to ghost build as well as personally build.

I remember playing that guitar (long time ago). It was surprisingly musical. What I remember best about your guitars John was that your necks were the most comfortable I have ever wrapped a hand around. Nice to hear that you are still building!!
