Hey all, I got a huge stack of wood (mostly walnut, mahogany & bubinga) years back and there was this random set with it that I can't seem to identify. It's not like any of the other mahogany in the stash and (as you can see) gets suuuuper dark under naphtha. It's got kind of a rosewood-y tap tone, maybe a bit more muted. Hope someone can help! What's the density? Does it have any smell? If it's hard as a rock and heavier than water, it might be ipe. |

It doesn't seem that heavy to me. I gotta test out how it behaves to water when I get home. What about Machiche? I came across a post that looked similar to this set. |

Possibly an exceptionally nice set of dark red meranti? The stuff I have used is somewhat heavier than Khaya, but not as heavy as Ipe. It does darken considerably under finish. |

+1 for the look of Ipe Affter handling and cutting Ipe you need iodine to disinfect all the splinters. |

I remember meeting some guy at Symposium back in the 80's who could ID wood by licking it... |

Oddly it doesn't smell much like anything. Just a very earthy, dirt-kinda smell. I sprayed it with some water and it sucked it right up. |

Dark Red Meranti has "no characteristic odor", so says the Wood Data Base: https://www.wood-database.com/common-name/ There is a considerable weight difference between the two species (meranti - 42 lbs/cu ft, Ipe - 69 lbs/cu ft), but there are many other species that it could be. The Wood Data Base gives a lot of good information that might help you nail down the species in question. |
