I was having a little trouble pushing my chisel through the brace wood, mostly the UTB and I got to thinking about paring chisels which I don't own. I decided to turn one of my bench chisels into a paring chisel. It doesn't have the length but it's long enough. Anyway, I set my Veritas MKII to 20 degrees and and roughed it out on my belt sander and then went through my 400/ 1200 diamond stone followed by by 8000 ceramic and finished on the strop. I took it to the braces and just couldn't believe the difference 5 degrees made. It's like the wood was scared of it and I didn't need to do anything but guide it. It was a good morning. |

Those kinds of things are so satisfying. I love it when tools work. |

I was surprised too the difference it makes. Cuts like butter. |

I recently say a Rob Cossman video where he mentioned having a chisel at a shallow angle set aside specifically for use in softwoods. Obviously you wouldn't chop a mortise in hardwood with it but seems like a great idea to have a specialty chisel set up for this type of operation (brace shaping)! |

In addition to to this, does the curved chisel make any difference.? I care the curves pretty easily with my flat chisel. |

I’ve always just gone bevel down with a regular chisel to pare the scallops Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
