I am working on a Romanillos style rosette for my current build. It is a pretty cool design, emulating some Moorish Arches in southern Spain. So far so good, bit of a brain teaser building the jig to make the log, but it is ready for glue-up. Having not done this bit before, looking for tips on glue-up. It fits so well in the clamping jigs I am tempted to soak in some thin CA glue. However I fear it might not soak in properly and fill any (very) tiny gaps. Or, take it apart and apply glue to each piece and fit it back into the clamping jigs. If so, I am thinking fish glue, vs Titebond, as it dries clear. Suggestions? Attachment: DSCN2267 (Phone).JPG

I use the same method, wax paper the holes in the plywood, and then thin CA. I also clamp the kerf of the plywood. It works very well. |

Thanks Josh, glad to hear from someone who has done this before! Yes, the kerf in the plywood clamping jig is designed for clamps to get everything tight. Will wax paper the jigs and wick in some CA. |

I haven't done one of Romanillos' rosettes, but I watched the construction of one by a Paracho builder who had studied with Romanillos. His clamping caul was made by drilling down the seam of two clamped blocks--so two pieces the full length of the log, with a half-cylinder groove in each. He glued the staves of the arches around the center dowel with Titebond, holding the pieces with his fingers, before wrapping the assembly tightly with string. Then the string was removed, the excess glue wiped off, and the log clamped in the waxed mold. I watched him do the whole process of the complete rosette, starting with wood scraps, a hand plane, knife, and a drill press. It took him less than two hours start to finish, and the result was noticeably cleaner than the rosettes I see in real Romanillos guitars. |

Pretty cool process Eric, thanks! I am following the Ray Courtnall plan for the build. Hopefully the jig I conjured up for cutting the 15 degree arch wedges is accurate enough that the staves are lined up correctly. |

meddlingfool wrote: What are we seeing here? That is one of the first steps in making the famous Romanillos rosette, specifically the arches. He details the process in his book, which is now unfortunately out of print. Here's are some pictures of my homage to José (I too was one of his students), which I am currently French polishing and may help to explain. |

Wow! That is beautiful, but I can’t tie it in to the first jig shown… |

Thanks guys! Ed, the jig in Rob's original post is really just three pieces of plywood, with holes in them (and a kerf). The round thing connecting them is actually part of the rosette, the triangular pieces are glued together into a circle as seen in the third picture in my post. The holes in the plywood help align the triangular pieces. I hope that helps. |

Ah, I see. The jig is for the arches near the rosette outer edge… |

Hi Josh, thanks for the photos - looks great! Wicking in the CA worked perfectly, thanks for the guidance. Ed, the round log with the 12 wedges representing the arches gets squared up first before cutting up into the individual pieces. I am currently fitting all the pieces together - it is coming along, here are a few pictures: Attachment: DSCN2268 (Small).JPG Attachment: DSCN2269 (Small).JPG Attachment: DSCN2272 (Small).JPG Attachment: DSCN2273 (Small).JPG Attachment: DSCN2274 (Small).JPG

That’s really cool! I have to put on my readers just to look at the pictures, lol…can’t imagine trying to actually do that… |

Hahaa! Sometimes I think my optivisor is glued to my head... I have just finished spraying an OM, so have lots of time while the finish cures. For this rosette you have to have lots of time, and lots of patience. Good thing I am not doing this for a living.... It took a week of trial and error just to get the arch log correct.... |

Hey Josh, Here is a shot of the finished rosette with just a wash coat of shellac. I am pretty pleased with the result. Thanks for your input. Cheers! Rob Attachment: PXL_20231212_001535020 (Phone).jpg
