I did this after the zoom meeting yesterday. I sheet of 3/4" X 4' X 2 ' None of those dimensions are accurate. 2 X 4 have ALWAYS been small, but when did they change plywood? $20 too!

I sawed it by hand into two pieces, 18 X 24, then cut the outside 1.25 or so bigger than the outline on the bandsaw. 2 drilled holes, and I cut the inside with my large fret saw. It is pretty square, I haven't checked it inch by inch, but it has all checked square. They don't match exactly, but pretty close in most spots; there are some bumps and squiggles. I'll file it to get the high points out, and get the curves smooth. The wood will bend to the high spots, and any gaps will just be gaps.

I'll use one of the inside chunks to use it as a platform to hold the top and back for carving. Leave a 3mm edge for carving the outside, and slide the form up so it is even or so to the plates for carving the inside.

The sawing of the profile went surprisingly fast. The fret saw I bought a long time ago works nice. I wanted a coping saw to cut violin to cello outlines, but I don't like the feel of coping saws; the blade never feels tight.

But. At one point I had to switch the handle around, and cut backwards. It didn't like that at all. So I moved the board on the table, and cut it from behind the teeth with the bow of the saw forward. It still cut terrible, but much better. Kinda jerky.

Got to the point where I could go normally, and the saw cut beautifully again.

What kind of physics is going on there?

For the center of the other side, I was able to slide the blade back, and start cutting from the top again. I won't do anything with the outside, or the center plate.

Seal with shellac or something?

Yes. A single layer in the middle, and a double 1.5" on the sides. It should work great for doing the ribs; with liners; and holding the plates for carving.
