Today I found in my 'damfino' tool department two groups of flexible abrasive wheels and a Dremel-sized mandrel for them. one group's green, the other's white and there is zero documentation. Is the grit on these things akin to ScotchBrite, where we can tell the grit by the color? And where,if there is a miracle, does anybody know where I can find the translation for these disks? Meanwhile, I think these were sold as 'fret polishing wheels', and the green seems coarser than the white. StewMac didn't offer an explanation. Thanks! |

I have those too and mine came from StewMac. They were originally intended to be fret polishers used in conjunction with the StewMac fret guard metal shield. We have the Collins Fret Buffer that polishes the frets on the entire neck in one swipe of the neck so much faster. I thought they sucked and threw mine in a drawer. Then Dave Collins comes along and uses a file to file the green one into a V shape. He uses them in a Dremel to polish the notched ramps in Gibson style TOM (tune-o-matic) saddles. When a guitar breaks strings at these saddles it's often a microscopic bur or imperfection in the groove that the strings rides in. The V shaped green wheel (be sure to wear safety glasses) will polish these ramps to a high shine and knock down any bur. Works great. In our case the function of the wheels came after not liking them for the intended purpose and some years later. |

Happy days. I'd been trying to absorb Hesh's advice about fret installation (Feed-n-Wax, clamping the frets in position, CA to lock in the frets...). Fifteen shop hours later my Evo Gold frets are happily living in my current project neck. Most satisfying fret installation I've done. All three steps Hesh mentioned, I did for the first time. Learned a whole bunch of new stuff! THANKS! And Hesh, thanks for demystifying those buffing wheels for me. I'll play with them after the current project's finished. |

Hey very cool Peter and thanks for the thanks. I wrote you a note in the other thread about Scotchbrite and I'm really glad that some of this stuff is working for you. Thanks for letting me know my friend. |
