OK, so I got a bit bored this afternoon and tried playing around with an AI image generator. Asked it to create an image of a guitar maker bending guitar sides...

Guess the AI engine must have found something out there about bending irons. At any rate, I'm easily entertained. Don't think it's quite time to worry too much about AI in lutherie at this point.

And to think you just put the output of AI straight into a CNC machine, and wonderful things happen automatically!

Hilarious!

My wife recently asked an AI image generator to create an image of seven sisters. It kept giving her images of six sisters, or eight sisters. Or some sisters would have extra limbs.

What worries me about this is the AI image generators’ penchant for ignoring rules which should not be ignored. When I ask for seven, it should give me seven; not six or eight. When I ask for images of seven women, women don’t have three arms. Yes, it’s silly and funny. But what happens when we trust AI with more important things? I don’t want it ignoring rules then. Food for thought.

People keep focusing on the last word, when they should be focusing on the first.

Love the double sound hole guitar in the background.

Generative AI is on a high speed train of accelerated development. If you aren’t familiar with Pepperoni Hug Spot, here is a version from a year+ ago - https://youtu.be/qSewd6Iaj6I?si=FCfhwZAMB0cmD8oX

And here is an updated version using the latest GPT and Midjourney - https://youtu.be/ISkgefCJcM0?si=-WRGJUiPcJlbCOeZ

I think that was another photo of a master luthier right there.

That honeycomb for a double top looks a little thick to me.

Fingerboard is missing some frets, and the guitar in upper RH has six tuners, but 4 tuner holes.

Part of the problem is that whatever answer AI gives you will be considered the next time it is asked to "think" about the same things. Even if the answer reached the first time was wrong, that answer is now added to the database. You can easily see why this bodes ill for the future. We need "THE ANSWER", not "AN ANSWER".
