For those of us who are building, I suggest (horrors!) using birch plywood for an end block. It ain't never going to split.

I've always inlaid a plywood strip (vertical placement) on the end block, on the back side of the block. I only build for a hobby and not production, so I have whatever time I need to do steps like this.
