Working on my second build, going much faster and will post pics about first build. Quick question. My backplate joints have looked so nice I haven't wanted a back strap. But when I want to add that for aesthetics, I figured to inlay. Watching a Schaffer video today he joined the strap in between the plates which never even occurred to me, seems (pun intended) weaker. Does anyone else prefer this method? May save some time but I'm skeptical.

I don’t use a decorative strip at all any more, but when I did, I inlayed it.

I inlay it. By inlaying it you get more glue area.

You're right Wade it is weaker I inlaid mine too.

Granted the BJR (back joint reinforcement) adds tremendous strength to the joint if you use one, one maker does not use BJRs. So with the BJR it's kind of a moot point which is stronger not to mention braces crossing the joint too.

Out of all the guitars we have repaired in the last 18+ years I've never seen a back joint with or without a BJR come open. They always crack somewhere else.

I prefer to inlay. I had a back separate once that had an inlay strip that I butted to.

I also inlay backstrips.

I think you mean back strip, rather than strap? A backstrap is something that you might put on the back face of the guitar headstock, opposite to the faceplate. Terminology is arbitrary and strange, but important for clarity.

Many builders insert a full thickness strip as a sandwich between the back plates when you glue them up. It can be a strip of the same stuff that you are going to use for binding the edges and can include purfling strips too for some nice design effects. Is it a weaker join? In theory yes, but, as Hesh said, you are probably going to add a back joint reinforcement strip on the inside and that makes it plenty strong. It isn’t a problem.

Funny, being Spring my mind went to some kind of warm weather “shirt” the young ladies around here start wearing this time of year. But, sure, let’s go with a part of a Moose, or whatever. ;-)
