I just can't figure this thing out. I made my nut as usual, seems square, and flat on the bottom, cut my slots with nut files angling deeper toward the tuners, every string sounds great except the high E which when placed on top of the nut next to the slot sounds super, slide it into the nut and thud it loses it's punch, dead as a doornail. I've cut the slot a tad deeper with the next wider file that didn't work. Is it possible the nut is defective in that particular area or am I missing something obvious here?

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg

I had something simular happen to me. I don't really think it is the
same problem you have because you said you used the next bigger size slot file.
In my case I was getting a deadening of the sound plus a strange twang on the E string.
It turned out my slot was too narrow and the string was getting pinched and
not seating all the way down.
I widened the slot a little to allow the string to go all the way down
and the problem went away.
