I am also one of those that cannot play. I know about seventeen cords, but that's not music. Almost everyone in my family plays something, I just got no rhythm, no timing. Can't dance either.

Thanks Brad for the tidbit about D'Angelico, I feel better now.

I've been playing guitar since the early 70's and really enjoy it.Basically rhythm acoustic but I still like to break out my old Strat every now and then! Actually I need to build a little more and play a little less

Wasn't me Serge and Hesh. I'm an old man and not sure I want to be a really old man.

Well, IMVHO, whomever Really Old Man is, they don't know their geography very well or perhaps they scrolled to an incorrect country

Now, I know there have been some pretty powerful hurricanes blow into the southern states, but I don't recall a one that would have moved Antiqua and Barbuda anywhere into the middle of Arkansas!

I agree Serge, I'd like to know more about this new OLFer.... Jeanne38935.5187037037

I've played at guitar(hack) since 1963. Much more acoustic, fingerpickin' but I would go to the crossroads to be Clapton for a week.My 50 year old little brother is a truly gifted guitar player in the Cleveland blues/jazz scene. My nephew studies guitar at Burke-Lee in Boston. On the other hand, neither of them would dream of picking up a chisel, plane, scraper and to them a "gramil" must be a lower echelon record award. So, that's how my dad's musical genes got distributed. When I do play, I keep picking up my 1976 D12-28. I haven't given up yet. MT

I'm an ukulelist . I've dabled in guitar off and on forever and a year but for now the ukulele is what I reach for.

I jam (hack) once a week and practice when I can.

I began playing at 13. Self taught, 6-10 hours of daily practice, Bands in N.Y. and CA until becoming an apprentice to John Carruthers.

Today I play once every week or two as time, and my son Josh, permit!

Paul
I play for my own pleasure now days, I use to perform many moons ago. I developed CTS and it severely limits my duration and technique anymore.
Me too Michael, CTS, Oh I gues that's CRS that I have. But I still pick it up several times a day, I used to play a lot but not so much now that I live in isolation. I need ta get out more.John How38935.8640625

I got my first guitar in 1973 when I was 20. I strummed chords and sang mostly, and played for a lot of years at private parties and bars. I took up piano in 1997, and started learning scales. It helped me be a better picker. I took up dobro about a year ago, again scales. I mostly play lap style slide now and I still sing. I built my first dobro after deciding that I could not afford to buy one.
I am nearly finished with number two. Maybe I can get some pics on here soon.

I haven't touched a guitar since the fisrt week in July.

I'm concentrating on the Mando lately.

once I get back to work in Sept it'll be building by day (in free classes in school) & playing by night & weekends.

Don't forget also the ex-Lowden employee/Avalon Founder Sam Irwin's course!!!

Martin, which of the three mandos you have made you play the most and prefer? I am only asking, because you have three very different designs, there...Sam Price38938.3359606481

the solid sided one lives in school.......

the mandonaught WAS favourite, though it's currently out on loan to a possible buyer.......

that leaves #1!!!

which I set down to read this!!!

the neck is really shiny now that the Danish oil is getting worn there, and I've fitted a bug pup for amping it in church.......

I'm not surprised about the mandonaught creating interest, that's a great mando with SOME volume..

Ahh, do ya mind posting a sound clip of the amped mando #1, when you've got time? I'm thinking of a mando pup too when I get into soundhole pup buying for my avalon and my potential firewood custom git-fiddle...

BTW the mando you made me is STILL sounding splendid.

That neck is built to last for an eternity!!!Sam Price38938.5948263889

Yep, I'm a guitar player also. Have been for about 40 years now. (Man, i'm getting old!).

Decided to take up woodworking a few years back and began to dabble with it. Never really thought about building guitars until a couple years ago. Then I saw the show 'Handmade Music' on TV with luthier Lynn Dudenbostel. He built a D-28 copy and it just smacked me in the face...I love guitars and I love making sawdust, so why not combine the two.

Haven't looked back yet, and don't plan to. But like you say, now instead of picking I find myself more and more out in the shop trying to figure out how to build the darn things.

I play the radio!! Seriously It took my daughter 3 solid days just to teach me how to play a harmonic. The reason I started building is because I'm so Cheap! I had no idea how addictive it would be, or expensive. Now 5 years later and about 20 instruments I still can't get enough.
I honestly beleive that it is a god given gift you either have the ability or you don't, & beleive me I've tried.

I came to guitar building from playing. I've played since my early teens (now 55) and some years ago decided that I couldn't continue taking my vintage guitars around the clubs so decided that building would be cheaper than buying the three custom guitars I needed. How wrong can you be! I've now built 20+ guitars and four lutes as well as repairing a number of original lutes and early guitars. I still only do it as a hobby builder, building only for myself. But I still think of myself mainly as a player, increasingly a consort player of early music.
