My neighbor who owns a music store just stopped by because he knew I use rare earth magnets sometimes for building, and he had a scary story from a customer in his store today.

The customer works for a large company who is battling 2 lawsuits right now about the use of rare earth magnets. He works for a company that produces board games, and the rare earth magnets were used as game pieces for a specific game. The pieces were plenty small enough to not be a choking hazard if swallowed, however there have been 2 fatalities where a child ingested a magnet, and then within an hour swallowed a 2nd one. The magnets stuck together tearing a hole in his stomach/intestine, and both children died. I think both children were very young, but this was a very scary thought considering I have 3 small kids and plenty of rare earth magnets in the shop. I don't mean to be a downer but this is a safety issue that never would have crossed my mind.

Mario, I assure you it is not an urban legend (yes, I check these things before making posts like this.) Here is a link to the Consumer Product Safety Commission listing the incidents they have had, and recall information. I'm willing to bet that most people with kids under 10 yrs. old have the game listed in their house.

Well howdy! Thanks for correcting me.

You can die from a lot of weird stuff. Sorry to share this sad news. When I was eight, my six year old brother was killed on a simple yard swing set at our home.

It's easy to get a bit jaded, especially after receiving one of these in an email on a weekly basis. I wonder if www.snopes.com actually substantiates true stories like this one?

John thanks for the post, I have a four year old nephew and one who is two. You can bet I'll share this with their mothers.

Thanks for this information John, i have some of those that i keep in a small plastic container and out of reach of children if they may visit my shop, they are very high on a shelf.

Agreed. My workshop used to be a utility/coal store room that is built onto the side of the house, very much like a garage. It is accessed by going through the kitchen, and one of the very last checks I do before I go to work and leave the children with my husband is to make sure all the blades, glues and other tools are out of the way and the door is shut. I am absolutely paranoid about this and would never forgive myself should my kids wander in there...(they are 3, 5 and 7)

Sam, not to make you look bad by my comment here, believe me, not at all, i would consider not just getting the door shut but double locked also, at 7 years old, a kid can wander very easily in there in a flash...My shop has 2 locks and i feel it's a good thing to also have metal framing around that door. I might also be just paramoid!

Probably a good idea to make sure your pets can't get at these bad boys too! The golden pup hanging around my house puts EVERYTHING in his mouth!
