I'm thinking about building a strip (cedar) canoe. Does anyone have any plan, book, or other recommendations. I will use it just a few times a year on vacation and perhaps a local lake every now and then.
I would like it to be a 2 person lake canoe that might see a little mild rapid action.
I'd like it to be light and easy to carry. Thanks!

Steve, I searched and found plans for a cajun pirogue and it was a two-person canoe made of 1/4 inch regular plywood with fiberglassed seams. Worked great.

So if you haven't searched the net, you might find what you are looking for pretty easily. Seems I didn't find plans but just where they talked about it, then I just did it....

I found lots of plans. I think want to build a cedar strip canoe. I'm hoping to get some good advice on a particular model/plan for my use.
I spent a lot of time in a canoe many years ago - lakes, rapids, fishing etc.

Are you looking for the nostalgia of a cedar strip canoe?

Just wondering Steve, 'cause I bought a used older Coleman plastic with aluminum inner structure model at the beginning of summer for $175, complete with paddles and cartop goodies for toting it.

We sure enjoyed building the pirogue in the garage and painting it up camo. We built it to put out duck decoys.

There's nothing like taking to the water on something you built yourself, you could buy a $200 guitar or you could build one and put your own touches on it

Steve you should have no problem finding plans, go to the store and pick up the magazine "Wooden Boat", it's dedicated to hand boat builders and there are a TON of plans in there. I'm actually going to start on a cedar strip Kayak in a few weeks, it's something I've wanted to do for years...

Steve, I've built two strippers, both kayaks. One from plans from Newfound woodworks and the other from my plans. This winter I'm going to do a canoe but haven't settled on a design yet. I'm looking for somethine quite stable as my kids will travel in it with my wife and me. Check out a book called "The Stripper's Guide to Canoe Building" by Hazen. It has a few sets of plans in it. Hope that helps.

Steve, Lee Valley sells plans and a how to book. A buddy of mine has built two from the LV plans and they work real nice.

Wow guys, now you have me wondering what a cedar strip canoe is like. How about a picture, I've never seen one.

Bruce take a gander through the Lee Valley website you should be able to see pictures there.

The thing about cedar strip canoes is that if they are built and finished nicely -- I'd cringe at the thought of even scuffing one. I've seen some at woodworking shows that would like great hung on the wall as art.

BTW: I've also seen them build with redwood....equally spectacular looking.

I have a source for excellent cedar strip canoe plans. I bought large dinghy plans from them. They have great step by step manual on line too. Give me a bit of time.MT

Wow, seems like we've got a few canoe/kayak builders here, me too many moons ago.

You should have a chat with Grant Goltz, he's got a kayak building website Squeedunk. He's also built birchbark canoes, not sure about strippers though.

I'm building the great Auk, I have the plans and as soon as I get the guitar stuff rolling again and the CNC stuff ironed out this will be my off time project to keep me sane. I'm hoping to have it done by summertime next year so we can go spend some time on the lakes around here and do some camping...

Like Woolson said, "The Strippers Guide to Canoe Building". I took boat building way back in High School and this was the text. I built a small boat that I used for years for ocean fishing but many of these canoes were built. I have had the book and am on my second copy as I let my first and it was not returned. It has great information and results in a beautiful, light weight, strong craft. It is on my 'to do' as well.

Steve, if you go to Amazon.com and enter the word canoe in the search. "canoecraft" is good and there are several others with plans.

Ya, but I only have Lutz.......

But you know what really looks awesome? Add some yellow cedar highlight strips alnog the chine line and near the shear.

Good luck with your project Steve. Oh ya, I can cut you some clear 20 foot Lutz strips from some cants I have in the back.....shipping would be killer though!
