...because darned if I know.

I got a grab box of exotic hardwood from Woodcraft a few weeks ago. There is some pretty neat stuf in there. Some of it is labled and some of it is pretty obvious what type of wood it is. However, this one piece has me stumped. I decided to use it to make my bridge prtotype (this is the first bridge I've made form scratch so don't laugh) I really like how the wood looks. When I was sanding it, the dust was a very bright orange.

Thanks Hesh.

I thought it might be cocobolo or bocote. I didn't even think about honduran rw...

What does honduran rw smell like? I was careful to wear a dust mask when working with this wood just because I didn't know what it was and I didn't want to have a reaction to it.

Bocote....doesn't look orange enough for coco. The only hitch there is that I don't know what color the dust from bocote is. Other than that, cocobolo. Not Honduran Rosewood.

I have a block of bocote that I've used for a bit of marquetry. It makes a yellowish-orange colored dust. Don't recall the smell -- it's been a while.

My first impressions were either bocote or possibly wenge.

Does it split easily along the grain lines? The bocote I have tends to do this.

Best,

Michael

Joe, can you give us a better pic of it? It's hard to tell the actual color in that pic. Is the background paper supposed to be white?

Maybe Honduras Rosewood, every woodcraft I have ever been in has honduras rosewood. However, the orange dust doesn't sound like honduras. Honduras has a definite odor when cut but I don't know how to describe it.

A picture of a bridge I made out of honduras, sort of similar:

I've been working with some Honduran Rosewood lately. The scent reminds me of tobacco leaves.

I think my monitor is a bit off. Marc's is the bridge that looks like bocote to me. The top bridge looks like something I have here at my shop that Oby Johnson (Targo Hardwoods) identified as Dalbergia Tuscarensis.
Common name unknown.
But then, my monitor's off....

Sorry, that was a manilla folder I used as a backdrop. Let me take a picture on white and upload it.
