[QUOTE=Robbie O'Brien] okay, here is the deal.

An American living in Brasil was coming to the States to tour and promote his recent release of his latest album. He asked me for a guitar to tour with and promised to get a lot of exposure for the guitar and possibly sell it when done with it

Soooo your famous now?
I hate that line !

Well, whoever the guy was that borrowed the guitar used Robbie, and Robbie is paying the price for it.

I don't think it was worth it. Live and learn.

Kinda makes you wonder why he didn't bring his own guitar when he came up from Brazil, doesn't it? Perhaps he was afraid of damage.

A lot of people I know will only check their instruments if it is in a Calton Flight Case. Kind of pricey, but not compared to a custom guitar.

I have taken guitars with me on airlines four times now, and checked them every time. But I always pack the guitar and case inside a stout cardboard box, and stuff the box with styro peanuts. Then paste "fragile" stickers all over the outside. So far, no problems.

I am suspicious of the automated baggage handling equipment that airlines now use. Seems to me that, with an irregular-shaped piece of baggage -- like a guitar case -- it's just asking for problems. Putting it inside a box minimizes those risks, I suspect.

Best,

Michael

Gate checking the thing too like I asked the guy to do would have also eliminated this problem.

Everytime I think about checking a guitar with an airline, I remember sitting on a plane in Phoenix watching a baggage handler raising packagesmover his head and slamming them down on a conveyor belt. It was 108 degrees outside. He had to be malicious to be that extreme in that heat.

I doubt if the guy would of used the guitar in any concert environment if he knew it was damaged that bad! Judging from the wedge the crack doesn't show readily. He still owes you big time if Southwest doesn't pony up!

If I was building professionally, I can think of a lot of guys that most would plead to let them borrow a guitar! It's a good deal for a builder. I don't know how Olsen got big, but a "James Taylor/Jackson Brown" type wanting to tour with my guitar wouldn't be turned down.

This situation is different, unless this guy is really big and exposure sufficient. He's still secondarily responsible.

Let us know what happens on this Robbie, will you?
Thanks

Billy has a very good point there, the guy from Brazil was responsible so i think he should pay up front and have burden of collecting from the airline company!
