Geesh Rod! I don't know ,what I'm seeing looks pretty good, either way. I really like the design. I'm sure it will clean up well. If I would of tried that, I would of probably inlayed into ebony, but that would of been a nightmare. Your way, seems a lot better.

Rod, I just installed a multi-piece inlay that I got from Andy. I was concerned about it coming apart when removed from the cardboard backer too. I called Andy and he told me to take a piece of clear packing tape and press it down over the entire inlay to hold things in place. He said the glue was water soluble and the tape would hold things together after the backing was removed.

I was really glad I called him because when the backing came off all the little pieces were loose from each other. They were stuck firmly to the tape though. I think this inlay had 37 pieces.

i don't envy you your task of reassembling the thing. what if you end up with a spare part.

even cutting the pearl in vn, i can't see how he can sell it for the price. i would hate to think how many hours, broken blades, temper tantrums, etc., etc., it would take me to do one.

Rod, that is going to look awesome! I too always wanted to try one of those beautiful rosettes. Now after seeing your thread, I won't!!!

At least you can be sure that this 'hard learned' lesson will stick! Pardon the pun...

I'm sure you will be vindicated in the end, my friend.

Don't beat yourself up Rod, your gaining valuable experience. You will be
inseting your rosette in the same way the masters did in days gone by.
When someone asks "How'd ya do that" You can tell them "one piece at a
time" ....     I bet they'll say WOW!

I think we all should charter a plane, fly to Viet Nam, and apprentice with those guys. They're definitely master craftsmen.

Rod,

Your "puzzle pieces" are looking really good! Think of it this way...you're just using the Sam Price installation technique. Just enhancing the "hand made" factor.

Thanks guys, I'm feeling better about the whole thing

here is the latest picture. I've got all the pieces "welded" in and I'm going to level all the pieces, than recut the outer chanel to clean it up to get a nice sharp edge, than flood it all with black epoxy. Leave it for 48 hours or more (till it's really hard) than level again. Cross your fingers

Bad lighting but you get the picture.
