While the sponsors I've dealt with have all been good, I find that the participation in the forum by some of them is too self-serving to make me comfortable. For example, when I began to see threads by sponsors announcing new products or sales, it annoyed me. Then, when I tried to organize a local get together of members, only to see the idea usurped by a sponsor who tried to turn it into a promotional opportunity for himself, I had enough. That's why I have posted so infrequently in this forum and why I have decided to no longer participate in it and why I will no longer do business with at least one sponsor.

Jim.
Jim, while I understand your frustration over this incident, I cant agree. Its important to remember that the actions of -- one -- person with in a group does not represent the entire community. I don't know of which gathering your referring to, so I cant comment, not that I would. But to diss the community for the actions of a single person seems wrong to me.

Per your request, I have deleted your account.

Jim, whoever you are,

I would just like to say (as both a member and a sponsor) that while I can understand what you're saying, and sympathize with how you feel over that incident, you should know that part of the contract between the Luthiers Forum and its Sponsors allow the Sponsors to post in-thread sales twice in six months. The sponsors here pay decent money for advertising, and we must take advantage of the opportunities afforded us by the powers that be.

This is not only a community for the free exchange of information regarding lutherie, but also a place to find vendors that supply materials to those who share in that malady.

Lastly, the financial support that the vendors supply helps to keep the OLF up and running. I have been hanging out on this forum for awhile, and can tell you that the vendors here (not speaking of myself) are all class-acts. The support that we give them as vendors in turn helps to support the OLF. One hand washes the other.
I certainly meant no disrespect to Tim or any of the other sponsors here. My
apologies if I have offended anyone and I have deleted my previous post.
Perhaps it's better if I keep my opinions to myself and retreat to observer
status.

Chas,

No offence taken by anyone I'm sure, whatever tone you read into my post was not the way I intended it to sound. What you said about Shane was perfectly appropriate. I just wanted to make sure that Tim got some recognition as well and for folks to hear a little of what I know about the character of the guy.

Peace

I can sympathize with you, Jim. It used to annoy the heck out of me on
another forum, and I'd probably feel betrayed if someone stole the
direction I was hoping to go in for a get together I was putting together.
Usually here, the in-thread advertising is on point and doesn't derail the
thread. You feel differently, and that's ok.

When I've interacted with our sponsors, they've not just put something I'll
like in my hands - they've gone completely out of their way for me. If you
think about it, that's a big deal and a big privelage.

I've been busy today at the day job....government meetings have a why of numbing your brian!!

First, Kim is on point, Tim did well with the Blackwood deal....I was just a conduit. Nicely done Tim!! Chas, don't feel that Kim was doing anything but adding Tim to the list of those that want to ensure that we, as guitar makers (I will save "Luthiers" for another time!) get what we want. Remember, almost all of the sponsers here also build or are moving towards building so look for products that support that...I know that is my motivation! So Chas, thanks for the kind words and thanks also for supporting Tim and by doing so acknowleding his hard work.

Jim, one of our memebers, the fine Bruce Dickey, explained to me one time when I was feeling guilty that I couldn't just "give" wood away..."as a seller you have to remember that your are helping people get what they truely need and want. As long as you are doing this you are providing a valuable service that would otherwise be unavailable if you were out of business" Although I paraphrased, those are the sentiments he shared with me that have changed my perspective on what I do. I am not getting rich off of this (just look at the "harvesting" threads!, oh ya and talk to my wife..) But I really enjoy and am proud of the opportunity to get and forward products that help others fullfil there dreams and run their businesses. As corny as it sounds....those are my motivators.

I have supported many of our sponsors also. They are all GREAT and I trust that they all offer exceptional service and products for the prices they offer. Hey!! How many places do you go where you see these kind of non-competative discussions. In the words of Red/Green, "we are all in this together".

Shane

I agree with Shane, and very well put. Even though we compete for business, I'm so proud to have such a fine competitor and stand up guy. I've bought products from him, and he from me. We give each other the same level of service as if he was a friend. I'm not in this to get rich either, I truly enjoy helping others succeed. I really do hope that the products we come up with will help you all succeed!
