Great looking guitar in progress Chris. I enjoyed
listening to your music. Good stuff!! Too bad though, after you get
sucked into this hobby, you won't have time for playing anymore
John,
I am so pleased to hear from you...and honored that you took the time to
listen to my music.
As far as building, my thoughts are already on #2!

Does everybody here use a chisel for brace shaping?

Yep, You got it bad too.
So with the exception of Carlton the MGL meeting should be a very fun time too
Hey, wait a minute...I reassemble that remark!

Chris, I don't know, man. It looks to me like you're making fantastic progress on only one day a week! Nice, clean work, too. It's gonna be sweet!

Thanks Carlton,

The one day a week is killing me because it's nearly all I think about until
it's time to go back again.

Looking good, Chris.

I rough shape my braces at the band saw, then get close to the line on the spindle sander, all before attaching the braces to the top. After I glue the braces on, I finish shaping with chisel and sandpaper.

Chris,
Just love that Walnut. And you are right about that Ebony. It's just beautiful.

I use Port Orford Cedar (POC) for flamenco guitars for side and back sets if the customer wants a "blanca" that is whiter than Cypress would be in that Cypress and related species (Monterey, Alaskan Yellow or Spanish) tend to be a more golden color.

I have also built Flamenco "negra" with Port Orford Cedar as the top and like the sound alot.

I have also built one flamenco blanca with POC for the neck and it is a super neck wood. I would use it more often but it is tough to find good quality neck stock...most of the POC that is being cut today is being cut into arrow shaft blanks as it is the best wood anywhere for arrowshafts!!

As a top wood it would be not be a good choice for a classical guitar in my opinion as its it can sound a bit harse as it has a crisp attack (Initial sound) to decay (resonance dropoff) ratio which is absolutely perfect for flamenco but would not lend itself to a classical.

For a steel string it should be a very good wood as it is very stiff so it can be taken thin. Note that I dont build steel strings, just classical and flamenco but really like POC.

I think that your combo of Walnut, POC and that killer looking Ebony is a winning combo...you will really like the sound. The white of the POC against the darker Walnut and ebony makes a really nice contrast.Shawn39027.5946990741

Thanks Shawn and BlueSpirit,

Tune in tomorrow or Wed. for build updates.
I'm expecting to have the top bracing and sides bent tomorrow then it's on
to building the box!

Here's a quick update on where I'm at as of this Tuesday evening.
I met my goals for today of finishing up the bracing on the top as well as
getting my sides bent and roughing in the neck blank.

This shows the little go deck for gluing on the finger braces and
soundhole braces. Doesn't take much clamping force to secure these.

Gluing down the first x brace.

Gluing the scarf joint. Note: The neck is also walnut.

Bending the sides with the Grand Auditorium bender mold that Robert
built.

One of the bent sides.

This is my finished braced top. I'm thinking I will go back and thin the
lower legs of the x-brace a bit more.

That's it for this week. Man, I hate waiting a week! Next week we should
be beginning to construct the box so it may just look like something
soon:)

Just one more thing....would you guys prefer I keep updating this thread
or posting a new update one each week?

From where I'm sitting, it looks like you get a week's worth of work done in one day! Nice job. It just goes to show...we tend to use the full time we're alloted to get something done. Your project spans several weeks, but when it's done you'll have, what, seven or eight days of actual work? Pretty impressive for a first guitar!

It might be a good idea to start a new thread for your updates. Some folks are still using dial-up connections, and when pictures are included, shorter threads make it easier for them to join in.

Thanks Carlton. That was my thought as well as it seems you have to load
the entire thread rather than just click on the updated link.
