your posted question certainly did not give
any indication that you had thought of anything other than "where do i
put the bridgeplate if i shorten the scale"(as indicated in the photo). [/
QUOTE]

That's because the question wasn't about anything else. If you believe I
haven't thought about brace placement because I didn't mention it in a
question regarding something different, I'm not sure what else I can say
other than that this is the same sort of condescending attitude that made
me quit building the last time and that it's the same sort of
condescending attitude that makes me want to privitize my efforts in it
from here on out.

I asked about bridge plates. If you can conclude from that that my entire
bracing scheme is a great work of piecemeal, well, the Will Hunting
remark stands.

I would say a bridge plate needs to at least cover the footprint of the bridge istself between the X brace. On the big side, I have seen one that ran from a 1/2 inch behind the back edge to almost covering the entire triangle area in front of the bridge between the X. I am about even to the back of the belly (I have a transverse brace about 1/4 inch behind that) and about 1/4 in front. Total width is about 1 3/4. EIrw.

Poor James....the plan is for 25.4" scale, if that's the one I drew for you all those years ago...and I know you well enough to know you've thought most of this through. Hang in there...
Mzrio, Howard, Rick Turner!! and several others!!These are guys with the "bones so to speak." They are "Grizzled Veterans" by their experience, not by how many post they have made, not saying anything. I gotta go from here now also. Hope see some of you down the road at shows or something. These are my views and not reflective of others I associate with. Was a nice 3 year run.
Stan... certainly we will be sad to see you go. I think it is an unnecessary action, but certainly that is your choice.

But... to clarify one point. You were here from the beginning and you know as well as anyone that the "levels" have no bearing on your skills as a luthier. They simply reflect your participation in the community. You were here when this was all discussed at length before. To imply otherwise is misleading.

Lance and I are simply trying to provide a nice community for everyone, not to stratify the pecking order in the luthier world.

Typically I will place the front edge of the plate very near or slightly in front of the front of my bridge. I have seen it 1/8" either in front or behind the front edge of the bridge. Whatever you do though, it's a good idea to extend the plate back beyond the bridge pins.John How39034.6083217593

If I could apprentice the man, I would let Howard beat me with a lash if I made a mistake or misjudgement!
The likes of master craftsmen like him make places like OLF the gems that they are, and I certainly hope that he doesnt leave {as I heard mentioned elsewhere}.
This is not a response to this post, or a criticism of you James, so much as it is a plea for my favorite luthier to remain part of this community.
If everyone of merit were to leave the site - there would be no-one but dunce newbs like me, asking dumb
questions with no-one to answer.
