Can anyone tell me how Bocote worked for them--bending, finishing ect. I've done some research and it appears as though its the same family and properties as Zircote? I've run across many beautiful sets and the colors and figure can be quite striking. Could this be an underappreciated wood that has the beauty, tone quality of zircote, just cheaper?

I received a very nice set from Steve Roberson of Colonial Tonewoods, I have not done anything with it yet so I will be watching this thread with interest. I can say that it is very oily stuff though but it seems that way with a lot of high contrast hardwoods.

Scott I haven't built with Bocote but I have cut a lot of sets, sanded and bent sides for customers. It is not difficult to bend. It is in the same family as Ziricote (Cordia) but without the cracking problems of Ziricote. Taptone is similar to EIR. If you looking to build a beautifully srtiking guitar I would definitely give Bocote a try. Definitely a sleeper.

and as Bob said, while it is a cordia, i had none of the cracking problems i had with ziricote.
it reminded me of a a green/black EIR really...
both in price & workability.

I don't think EIR is a good analogy. Bocote is heavier and harder.
