I use pure silk tape on the shell joins of my lutes, it, or paper are the traditional materials, applied with hide glue obviously.

What I compared were cotton/poly bias tape and nylon twill.

There has been some discussion on another list lately about silk. One member did some tests, and found that washing the silk improved the adhesion. Many fabrics have some sort of sizing on them when new, and that could interfere with glue. I'd think hide glue would stick just fine.
