Got this in an e-mail from a nephew.

What Happened?
At first I thought this was funny...then I realized the awful truth of it.
Be sure to read all the way to the end!

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries, then
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers,
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.

Put these words
upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me
to my doom..."

When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax.

Accounts Receivable Tax
Building Permit Tax
CDL license Tax

Federal Income Tax
Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)

Yep, taxes suck!

Imagine, I'm in the 42% 'bracket'... True, we have all kinds of social nets, but sometimes, I'd rather have more of my own money in my pockets....

I can understand the need for taxes. Infrastructures and services don't pay for themselves.   The taxes were supposed to help pay the 'war' efforts and were to be temporary.... Ahem... They soon discovered what kind of cash cow they had on their hands and they created a Monster...

Why do we keep electing these parasites-that is the QUESTION.
We obviously don't care enough to change it. With the internet it should be possible to mount grass roots campaign to re-call or defeat the scoundrels. Easiest to vote them out in elections but, the way we act, we must be very happy with the way things are!

Taxes are unconstitutional. If memory serves me, a bunch of folks dumped a lot of tea into the Boston Harbor over taxation without representation...

My comments are not to be construed as political, but historical in nature.

Good message, Bob. Some taxes are definitely necessary, if we want interstate highways, for example, but we are definitely taxed to death and soooooo much of it is wasted, and the wealthy can get around it. Without the middle class, the system would collapse.

middle and some lower class americans pay for this country and receive the very least. Can we discuss spending many more dollars here. Can a social program that is simply humanitarian be mentioned without cries of 'commie' or 'trouble-maker'.

America has not lost it's soul, it no longer has one.

Taxes have been around for a very very long time (which I'm sure you all know). Long before any history was ever conceived on the Western Hemisphere.

Crazy poem Bob.

There are a handfull of those taxes that have been around since Jesus was in diapers (if he was in diapers that is)

Road tax
Land tax
Service tax
Even religious tax (lets not go there right )Rod True39079.8867592593

As a politician (one of the Parisites) I am not sure how to respond. As people stopped taking care of their neighbours the state had to start and it takes taxes to do so. People always tell me they want their taxes lowered and I tell them so do I. Then I ask which services they want cut along with the Tax Cuts. The taxes arne't the problem, it's the mis management in the public sector that is the problem and those guys don't get voted in even though they often act like they run the country.

Interesting discussion.
Avery, you are correct-to a degree. Taxes are not the total problem but the way the tax monies are allocated and spent. The problem, in my opinion, lies in the gradual erosion of humanity for all our fellows to 'the best for the individual and to hell with the rest. Yes, we are to be our 'brothers' keeper'.
BTW, my Pop and grandfathers were polititions in Colorado and denver for years

Bob, I realise that the tax in itself isn't the issue. But personally, I've been taxed to near death. Health insurance is another killer, as are rising utilities costs, spurred on by rising fuel costs. Add them all together, and some of the taxes seem outrageous, and there's no way to tell where it's really going to.
Simplify.

You know, what i find amazing is that with maybe 250 millions tax payers in the USA , you would expect that that many people, combined with the richest entreprises in the world (who benefit from tax evasion systems i know! ) that the simple guy would at least get a break somewhere! I think somebody's getting ripped off or is it just me?

Seems like we live the same thing here in Canada but on much lower scale. Still is discouraging for the middle and lower income though. Surprised there ain't much more people in the streets denouncing this stupid situation, too many chiefs for the labourers that we have me thinks.

Don,
I don't mean to say that the taxes aren't a killer. If we would change our philosophical direction, taxes wouls go down and what we recieve from them, way up.

We pay, when all taxes are included with income tax (many are hidden) about 50%.

This country's govt. has always raised the fear of socialism, but in fact, European countries have been socialistic since 1880's and our European allies have been socialist for years, to large degree-or less.

Generally,
Europeans pay, in total roughly the same a us , but for their money they are receiving:
Free education, for many education past high school is paik AND their ed. systems far superior to ours. We have allowed our ed. system to go into toilet because big money and elected officials have no reason to care about education. Science ALL but a very few are millionairs, they know their kids go to Groton and then to yale etc.

Free medical for ALL-scrips cost half as much
Everyone has a roof over their heads-not just flop houselide
Everyone has enough to eat to be healthy-Here, we have more than 18 millions kids that go to bed hungery-and the numbers are growing.
Maternity leave for mother and or father for up to 3 years-paid. They obviously value bonding and the important early years to a much higher degree that we do.
Approx. 1 month paid vacation + hollidays
The list is endless

We didn't have income tax until WWI, they said "it's only for the duration of the war, to help fund the war effort, trust us...."

Now we've got the GST (VAT) too!

Yeah, seriously, I'm half considering getting a second VAT number for lutherie-related stuff (selling a minor amount of tonewood to justify it, and a guitar once in a while) in order to not pay the 19% on everything I order and buy.

Im interested to have a real live politician here - and although Im Canadian I feel that leaves me in MORE of a position to speak on this issue as we pay much higher taxes for our services {albeit a little more comprehensive} here in Canada.
In BC for example we have a personal tax rate of 52%.
Dont you feel that beauracracy administration has become {absurdly} too large and that there are sometimes incredible redundancy within agencies?
Ive heard estimates that there could be as much as 2/3's of civil servant positions eliminated, and a streamlining of agencies to make them run more efficiently than they do now with only 1/3 of the manpower. Do you think this is true?
Im sure you have a unique vantage point on these issues.
Cheers
Charliewood
....As people stopped taking care of their neighbours the state had to start......
As a good libertarian, I have to say, no, the state did not have to start. In fact the state should not have started. YMMV!
Perhaps the reason people stopped helping their neighbors is because the state started doing it. Many don't help now and use the excuse that they pay taxes.
