Well,I thought I would post a few pics of my first attempt at this fun part of building. The first is the wedge trimmed and ready for the 45*.


Here I'm cutting with a 1/4" chisel(VERY sharp btw)


Here is the reflection on my polished chisel.This is a
neat trick!

I cut the binding to size and it fit (after a couple of trys)


Success! Now three more to do....

Almost there buddy! Looks better than anything I have done. I dont do mitres, like windows and such. You get big props from me for trying and making the first one look great. I bet the whole thing is going to be pretty.

Is there any trick to ajust and trim the wedge at just the right heigth?

Thanks guys,It is fun doing this stuff.I think on my next guitar If I ever get to it, I'll use 3 purflings. It seems like it would be a bit easier to cut the 45's.I wouldn't want to try only a single line!
Alain- I just trimmed the wedge and used a needle file to get the heighth to fit with the binding.

Great job. I didnt realize you cut the mitre and left the top portion of the end graft equal to the top point of the mitre. Looks like I have been making more complicated than it is. Thanks for the pictures

Right on Dave! Great looking work. That's the best trick, the old 'use the reflection' ploy. Works great.

Is that Mahogany binding you got there Dave? (Wood recognition is one thing I can certainly get better at)

That looks nice indeed. It would have been nice to go with another white purfling line as the black will almost disappear on you against that dark EIR. But these are the things we learn along the way.

Oh.....and nice shop chair you got there. Mines a plastic stool that is very uncomfortable to sit on for long periods of time.Rod True39085.9937037037

Dave I use to fret over end graft and center seam miters but after the 12 segment rosette I did on the Narra/Carp guitar for Mark Macalik this fall with 48 miters on just the rosette alone, doing 8 aint nothing anymore

Okay, now you're just showin' off!    Being a miter maiden myself, my hat is tipping in your direction.

Neat trick with the chisel. Is that a Blues Creek Guitar cradle you’re using for additional support of the guitar body? Another neat idea. Wow and looking good.

Mlloyd- That is the guitar cradle from my binding jig, from LMI. I use it to hold the guitar for a lot.Just clamp it to the bench and sand or whatever.

Looks good Dave. I meant to do that on two guitars so far, but the router manged to just go all the way around the tail both times

But 3 more chances are coming up!
