Since I've come to a stalemate of sorts on no.3, (debating about neck), I've decided to start work on no.4 lest my idle thoughts turn to chicanery...

No.4 is to be a 29.0 inch Baritone in Wenge and Sitka.

Here's the plan.



The Wenge plank I bought was on the narrow side, 6.250 inches. I needed to make a 4 piece back.



I wonder if I'll need a back seem on all joints? (Note: I scrapped the joint and added some shellac to see how it looked)



Finally, I'm not sure where to go with the binding. Snakewood? (I can probably score some material for a bridge and a finger board) or black as sin ebony?

while the plan i've recently drawn is not intended to be a baritone, it does look an awful lot like what you've got on paper. even the cutaway looks the same. here i thought i was being original and you're beating me to it.
beautiful shape i think! and beautiful woods. it's going to look snazy with either binding scheme. you're doing great alain. full speed ahead.
oh, i'd only go with one strip down the middle seam of the back.

Oh Alain, and i forgot , snakewood would be my first choice too!

Snakewood or light colored BRW would be my choice. Are you binding the FB?

Sergio and Phil, that's the exact same shape and size as my no.2. 16.1875 lower bout. I was looking around at other Baritones and I was surprised to see that they weren't larger than an SJ.   Some were actually smaller. This will be my first non-cutaway guitar!

I'm leaning towards snakewood too.

JJ, I will bind the fingerboard. How does snakewood, bound in snakewood sound? If I can't appropriate myself of some snakewood, I'll use ebony. I have a very nice curly gaboon ebony blank I got from the Zoot Meister.

Whats the neck joint - 15th fret - looks like it form the bridge position and size ??? FYI mine are all 14, I make the bridge a tad longer than usual to reach the X.

Oh I would do snakewood, but ebony with a maple/blk/maple would look very classy as well. the wenge will finish a deep brownish.

Tony, the bridge is a tad over 6 inches in length. This one is to be a 14 fretter as well. I played around quite a bit with the positioning of the soundhole. I also tried drawing many scale lengths (28, 28.5, 29, 30) and 14th and 15th fretters... In the end, I figured that 29.0 was as long as the case permited and the bridge, X and soundhole were where I wanted them to be....

I can't wait to see this guitar finished. I think the Wenge, although seemingly plain looking, will look nice under finish. There is a lot of chocolate and black. Smells great, actually! Nasty little wood though. It'll throw splinters at you if you look at it funny! Alain Desforges39093.5065393519

I always like seeing baritone builds, and I sure like
the body shape on yours. For me the baritone is on the
someday list. Thanks for posting yours. It helps me
keep the thought of building one alive. The snakewood
sure works for me.

My current is a non cutaway too Alain. A bit like having a holiday
