Well, I for one would not be where I am today (in regards to my building knowledge) without the MIMF, and I bet there are many other's here who would say the same.

I know it's not set up how many of us would do it. It certainly does have it's disadvantages especially compaired to our great OLF, but you can't ignore the fact that they probably have the best archive system for guitar builders on the net and there are lots of good people there willing to help. It's just really a different place.

We've said it many times here before, It's Deb's sandbox and she's allowed to play how every she likes. Sad thing is that she may end up playing alone in the future.Rod True39097.9615162037

I started in with the MIMF around 99, and to be honest still favor it in
many ways. There are certainly limitations that upset a lot of people, but I
think that Deb has adopted a lot of safeguards and policies that lean
heavy on the "better safe than sorry" philosophy. The purpose of many
policies may not be immediately apparent, and whether they be for legal
protection, privacy issues, keeping discussions clean, or for many other
reasons, I really think they all have reason for being there.

If a moderator is uncertain about the ownership of photos posted they
will err on the safe side and put them in to hiding until they are sure the
person posting holds all rights to the material. I know that they also don't
want photos linked to private hosts because it can turn in to a mess when
they archive the discussion, without being certain that the photos will still
be there years down the road.

Don't get me wrong, I have been frustrated there myself in the past and
have come close to starting a spat with Deb. In each case however I
eventually came to see the reasons things were done how they were. I
may not always agree, but I can at least see her reasons and disagree with
a great deal of respect.

I still think it is an excellent resource and community that would be very
difficult to replace. This forum is certainly excellent as well, but I really
think of them as compliments to each other, each with their own strong
points.

David, I understand most of the reasons and the arguments behind the seemingly silly rules, but if they are a good idea why is it that no other forum I've ever been a part of (and not just instrument making forums by any means) does the same thing? It all seems a bit arbitrary and authoritarian. Not to mention that they seem to be ignoring all that the web has to offer and hobbling themselves in the process.

I don't bother with the place at all anymore.

I dunno, I've used the internet and forums in general for many years, and saw these sort of rules in place wayyy back in '98. Old archaic rules that were based on dial-up speeds, superstition...one forum I used prevented you from private messaging, providing links to other forums where you could discuss other subjects and emailing members on subjects you'd get told off about if you tried to discuss it in the open air. Seemingly innocent subjects, mind you.

These rules work well when there are young kids using forums, but I am talking about a community where adults were members!!!

I moderate alongside a small team of other mods on a busy guitar forum, and it's pretty democratic. We let each other know if things get a little autocratic, or ban-happy...Sam Price39098.1460300926

Yup, every time I post over there I say I'm never going back. In over 5000 forum posts I've been modded about 3 times. and never for a link to soundclick!!!

I forget to switch to less relaxed mode before I go there.

the archive is excellent, but at least here if I ask a daft question people will answer it (again!!) Over there it's "See the archive"

We had a conversation about the MIMF here well over a year ago, and we all were asked not to bash the other forums. There's no reason to here. We should continue in that manner, and leave Deb and the MIMF alone. It has as much of an important role in the luthier community as the OLF does, and is an invaluable resource for folks wanting to build just about any kind of stringed instrument. Different strokes for different folks.

Im not bashing anyone here -
I only have to say that you should prolly be happy that MIMF is run the way it is - as thats the reason we have the OLF and the other luthierforum now!
The need for all ends of the luthiery spectrum to be represented - have resulted in new forums slowly being
created over the years.
Thats a good thing in the end - everyone eventualy finds themselves where they feel most comfortable in the long run.

Shame on you for leaving the MIMF and coming to this forum to "rally" support for your "cause". "I'm gonna tell my dad on you"...sheesh. If you are above those forum rules, don't go there. I think you, Mr. Edwards owe an apology to the MIMF membership and Deb directly. Maybe some of you other posters as well.

Ok, |I'd mentioned this weird beastie in another thread a few weeks ago, back when I could remember my password and didn't have to re register with my middle initial!!

Anyway, cedar top, walnut rosette, back & sides, mahogany binding & neck, rosewood fingerboard. scale is two frets shorter than a fender. Originally it was going to be a 16th fret join, but the stretch for chords was going to be awful!!

I still have to put on the truss rod cover and there will be a piezo going under the saddle.

As one set of new chord shapes is enough for anyone to learn, it's tuned GDAE so I guess that it's an OM

Larry, it has been our soft moderation here that has allowed the OLF to flourish.

I did make a subtle post saying "Thanks Don well said" as a way of agreeing and reinforcing his thoughts on the MIMF. Since my post, there has been no other trash talking. So it appeared to be effective.

We will continue to moderate the OLF in the same manner. Its a reflection of my personality, I am a very passive guy, and feel that we are all responsible adults and can act as such.

Lastly, Charlie has a good point, I disagree that the OLF excises because of the rules at the MIMF, but I do agree that there is a need for different flavors and that they all coexist peacefully.

But.. before I do... let me once again reiterate. There is no animosity or "competition" between the OLF and the MIMF or any other forum out there. I too have been a long time member over there and I still read somewhat frequently. It is a nice resource. Deb runs her board the way she sees fit and that is ok. Live and let live.
