Does anyone know of a good but free program for ftp'ing files? I used to use a DOS window and just ftp things to my website. After a forced upgrade (I work for HP) it seems to not let me do a put command anymore. I called my web hosting company and they recommended WSFTP to fix the problem. I would rather find something that I don't have to purchase if there is anything available.

It sounds like you are all fixed up but I'll add one for the list:

There's a bare-bones freeware version which works fine for me. If you are enough of a computer old-timer you may remember using Norton Commander in DOS. This FTP program mimics the window setup of NC (in modern Windows dress, of course).
I like it and in my machines it's replaced WS-FTP lite which I lost in a HD crash and didn't want to replace with the paid version.

If you are more comfortable from a command line, FTP is part of Windows XP and Vista. I like the GUI ones mentioned, but am faster at a command line.

It is also possible to do a direct FTP command to a path in a browser but it does not give you feedback so it is only useful for a single file or directory.

Shawn, how do you access ftp in Windows XP? I know it's available in the DOS window, but is there another ftp app that I'm not aware of?

The command line version is in the cmd.exe shell. There actually is not any DOS anymore in Windows but most of the DOS command functions are still there for compatibility reasons.

The gui FTP is available in hyperterminal. It can be found at Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Hyperterminal. When you set up a connection instead of using it as a command line modem driven terminal, set connect via TCP/IP (winsock) and it will then be in FTP mode. Give it the name or IP address of the remote FTP server and hit connect and you will be connected. The connection setting will be saved so next time you need to use it, just choose then connection name when you launch Hyperterminal.

Shawn, thanks for the info. I tried connecting as you describe and it says cannot open port 23 on my website. Should this work like a regular ftp session and prompt me for a username/password?

Yes...the port number is changeable to whatever port the website has open for FTP. Port 23 is the port for Telnet which works for FTP in most cases but often ISP/APS's will set access to other port numbers.

Same with username and password, depending on the configuration used by the ISP that can be turned on or not at the directory level.

You can use Internet Explorer for ftp. You just put "ftp://ftp.domainname.com/..." and it should prompt you for a password. From there it works just like Windows Explorer, you can drag and drop files, create folders, etc... In XP it adds the site to your Network Places as well when you're looking at My Computer.
