Hello all,
lately I’ve been thinking of a couple of old friends that I used to play in a band
with many years ago. I have not seen or heard from them in about 20 years.
Being here at the OLF has re-kindled some old memories of those guys.
I know this might be a bit of stretch, asking if anyone knows them. But, we’ve all heard the old
saying, “It’s A Small World”. So, who knows!
Their names are; Steve Kalles, and Brian Kalles. (I’m not sure if I have spelled the name right)
Here’s a little of what I know about them;
Steve played electric guitar. Brian played bass guitar, but in the last few years I knew him,
he was making the transition to keyboards.(electric piano and organ)
They both were born(I think), and lived in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
They had a brother named Michael. He was the second oldest, Brian was the youngest.
I’m not exactly sure of their ages. But, I think Steve would be about 54 now, and Brian 49.
I first met them in 1975, in Hallandale Beach, Florida at the Diplomat Hotel
where I used to work as a Cabana boy. We became friends
fairly quick. They invited me to Toronto, so I went.
I lived there for about 6 months. Got to know them pretty well.
I say that because of a story they told me of how their father died, which
I believe was in the mid to late 1960's. This story has to be unique to only them. Here it is;
Their father was playing golf that day. He had hit one into the woods.
The ball came to rest either up against a stump or close to it.
From what I remember, his friends told him to move the ball.
But, he insisted that he should play the ball as it lies.
Now, from what I understand, back then golf club shafts were made of materials other than steel and graphite.
I can’t remember what Steve said the shaft was made of. But, when his father took the swing, it hit the stump.
The shaft split. The club head recoiled, and allowed the broken shaft to swing around and slice
his fathers neck. One of his fellow golfers was a doctor, and administered care immediately.
However, he had died of complications later in the hospital.
Folks, my only intention to all of this, is to just say hello to some old friends.
