years ago i thinned with the plane and scrapers. now i use the thickness sander. a lot less work!!!!

a thickness planer, even using a carrier board, is very risky. the thin plates and sides particularly are too likely to shatter.

I used a scraper for my first 2. Thickness sander on the last 2. Much less work, for sure, but not necessary. The machines certainly make everything more consistent.

I use a thickness sander now but in the past I used a wagner safety planer chucked in my drill press. I then finished off with a scraper.

Yeah, I forgot to add that part, Hesh. I first used the Saf-T-Planer and then finished with a scraper on my first 2.

Thickness sander.

I've just taken down a couple of Padauk sides with the thickness sander.

They were fairly thick so I chunked off most of them with 38 grit and cleaned up with 120.

We've got another set which we ran through the thicknesser, now unusable due to tearout.

Fairly new to this ..not ready to put out for thickness sander...so I go

No. 4-1/2 Smooth Plane

Then cabinet scraper Veritas® Cabinet Scraper - Woodworking

Takes a while and a little elbow grease to get down to thickness, but I love the shavings and don't have to worry about the sawdust since  I don't have a vac system yet...

Bob, I use the Wagner safety planer in my drill press for thinning tops, backs, and sides.I follow that with my disk sander also in the drill press. It works well. There is quite a bit on this in the archives.
