Hi all. I am building my first two guitars (acoustics) simultaneously from
scratch...
anyway I have some pieces of rosewood that my dad had around whitch I
want to use for fingerboards, they are not totally flat but the bow can be
flexed out of them fairly easily, so should i glue them onto the neck before
shaping them (arching and smoothing) or try to flatten them first???
Any suggestions would be helpful...

Thanks, Jebarri

I know nothing, but flattening seems logical.  ISTM that you do not want to impart any unnecessary stress into the neck.

Hey Jebarri,
Sorry but I'm a newbie too so I am not completely sure about anything (hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in here). I'm with good ol' Waddy here, and everything I have been told is that you don't want stress on any parts or the guitar if you can help it. I even just read and article that said if you put the frets in before the installing, and the fretboard has a bow that it should be clamped down and corrected before gluing to the neck. If that was the case and you installed the frets before the gluing to the neck you may be able to correct the bow that way. (just my newbie thought process though)

If you can flex the bow out of the pieces then it sounds like theyre quite thin. Is there any deformation across the blanks? If there is then I'd be tardy about using them unless you can plane out the deformation.

Thanks...
Martin: They are 3/16" thick, so i am going to laminate a piece of black
walnut on the back (the necks are black walnut).
Any idea on the minimum thickness of the rosewood for laminating???
Also, does anybody know if there is a way of straightening out the
bow???
What about positioning it so it counteracts the pull of the strings, give the
trussrod a little helpJavaScript:AddSmileyIcon('')
I am trying to stear away from buying rainforest wood.

Thanks for your comments,
Jebarri

A laminated fretboard? Ive never heard of that before but some of the more experienced luthiers in here might have some comments on this one.

I read a thread about laminated fretboards and it sounded like they would be
ok...
