Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could outline how to use a router to make a radiused dish for gluing in braces in a go-jig, or sanding the ribs to shape for the domed top/bottom.

Thanks for any advice.

Also go do a search, and make sure the section you request to search is the archives. there are many threads that appear with the search words radius dish.

I used the Bowl Profiling Fixture plan from the Library of Plans at the top of this page. It's a great plan and a simple to use jig.



And as Jon says there's lots of info in the archives.

there are many ways to create the guides that your router will slide on, but the easiest is to buy the radius templates from our sponsors luthier suppliers or lmi to serve as routing templates. they will also serve a host of other uses and are a very good investment.

Hi Stefan, here's what I did, I cut my mdf with a circle cutting jig into a 2 foot circle, then I built a frame to lay it on...

Then I put my mdf on the frame and line up the hole in the mdf "that was from cutting the circle" with a wooden dowel on the frame......

the outer pegs are for the rail my router will ride on....

next comes the homemade rail, I have 1 for each dish size.....

then comes the router with wooden blocks attached to the bottom to ride between the rails.......

then you must move everything outside  because its gonna make a mess, I tried one with my son indexing the dish as I made a pass all the way across and then tried another having him turn the dish and slowly feed the router toward the center of the dish "that worked better"......

I used a method I found in the MIMF archive. It uses the theory of a "Long Compas"

The advantage of this method is you dont need to create curved rails. Just a kind of cradle for the router , I made mine so that one way up it cuts 15 ft and the other 30.Each side is triangular and so easy to make accurately using just a straight edge to guide the router.

I checked the curve of the resulting dishes and it seems good.

By the way - It makes a lot of MDF dust !!!!
