Things were going so smoothly with #3 and I was just starting to feel
really
good about my progress until......

This would have been a good thread to go in the stupid mistakes topic a
short while back....

I was so concerned with getting my headblock glued and positioned
properly
that I forgot to cut the length and angle for the back!
The bad thing is I didn't realize it until I went to profile my sides for the
back and realized the block was 4 inches deep and I had already installed
the kerfing for the top.

I was able to recover, however. It set me back about 2 hours of
meticulous work. To correct myself I began by using a Dremel with a cut-
off blade to begin cutting away the excess (at least I was smart enough to
have scribed my lines on the block before gluing). I made several relief
cuts then began chiseling out big chunks of mahogany. When I got it
somewhat close I proceeded with profiling my sides getting the headblock
area as close as possible. Then with the sides out of my way for the most
part I was able to put some 80 grit on a piece of oak and begin sanding in
the proper angle. I eventually was able to get it all squared away again,
finished with profiling the sides and installed my back kerfing.

All is well........for now

Yes, there are always bigger mistakes to make (see my recent comments about having to take the back off a classical guitar in a thread on fish glue disassembly - it helps to set the neck properly BEFORE the glue has dried )
