One way to find those hidden pitch pockets in a spruce top.

This is a Sitka “AA” top and by looking at it under normal light it’s hard to find any flaws like pitch pockets.



So after I’ve sanded the tops to between 4-3mm I’ll inspect them with a strong light in search of flaws. (Beauty marks.)

Here you can see a pitch pocket.



Now under normal light you can make out the flaw. Indicated here by the arrow.



By flipping the top over and viewing with a strong light you will be able to tell on which side it is closest to the surface. Usually the darker and larger the showing indicates that the flaw is closer to the side you’re directly viewing. As in the next picture which is the same flaw. For this top I decided to use the other side as the soundboard’s top surface and finished sanding to 2mm.



I didn’t find anymore.

The only technical detail you omitted is the effect of pitch pockets on MOE and stiffness given the elastomeric nature of their contents.

That is THE single best explanation of pitch pockets that I have, personally, ever heard. I had no idea why my dog whined so bad when I played...I thought it was me!

So, does Shane's Lutz have more perfect pitch pockets than other spruces or just a better chance?  Also, do you suppose it would be possible to find the correct combination of pitch pockets to offset the problem with the G string on Classical guitars?
